Would you consider choosing feminist, solution-focused, or narrative therapies when counseling individual clients, marriage clients, and family clients? What empirical evidence is available to support the use of these theories? Feminist therapy focuses on empowerment of women to build self-esteem, communication, and assertiveness. “Feminist therapy helps girls and women understand how they have incorporated societal beliefs and values. The therapist works collaboratively with them to challenge and transform those constructs that are destructive to the self and helps them create their own perspectives” (Murdock,2017). I would not use this approach for marriage clients or family clients unless all of them were women. Solution-focused therapy focuses on treating all of the clients, but it has limits on meeting the client's emotional needs. “SF therapists really don’t care what motivates people in general. They simply observe what clients want to achieve and use clients’ identified strengths and resources to help them reach solutions” (Murdock,2017). Therefore, I would choose narrative therapy because it has the ability to express problems and allow the client to create a positive interaction. NT therapist’s goal is to deconstruct the client story and support their outcomes of that story, while also changing the negative communication into a less judgmental and more accepting expression.
