Would you consider choosing feminist, solution-focused, or narrative therapies when counseling individual clients, marriage clients, and family clients? What empirical evidence is available to support the use of these theories? Solution-focused therapy is viewed as a collaborative approach. The Counselor will ask the clients to demonstrate cooperating behavior after the first session of the Counselor explaining what that can look like. The Counselor and client are to respect one another and be open-minded to each other's worldviews. The Counselor can adapt to the client's use of language to better the client-counselor relationship. In this process, the Counselor can also use the influence of language to determine how the client represents their complaint and how that complaint can become solution-oriented talk. The beauty of this form of therapy is within the goals. The Counselor wants to implement change within the problematic situation, viewing and promoting solutions to add to the issue (Murdock, 2017). This form of therapy can seem like a more individual-based approach. However, when used in the correct context, within marital issues solutions are a necessary. The solution-focused Counselor can interpret what is going on beyond the individual's perception and create a goal for a married couple to overcome such struggles. Based on studies conducted to identify if this approach produces positive outcomes, ten studies were explicitly conducted on adult mental health; five were associated with depression, and four out of the five resulted in improvements for the individuals. For marriage and family, six studies were conducted; this involved family- oriented solution-focused therapy where one individual had schizophrenia, another case where a member had autism, and general marital difficulties of individuals with children. These studies confirmed that such therapy was promising (Gingerich & Peterson, 2013). Solution-focused therapy is a brief approach (it takes fewer sessions than most therapies), so it can seem surprising that results indicate it is effective and creates the desired outcome.
