Unit 5 Discussion 1 Adulthood is full of misconceptions. I truly believe there is really no way to prepare for the harsh realities of adulthood without proper guidance. There are so many misconceptions about paying bills, living alone, mortgages, insurance, the list goes on, and unless there is someone to pass on knowledge, many individuals learn the hard way. Even though when we use conceptual knowledge to recognize material, objects, or even recall certain information, it is difficult to be precise in some recollections especially if there has been change (Goldstein, 2018). If a change is present, then it may take some time until an individual realizes it is a previously known piece of information. Differences may alter some memories, providing a misconception of the cognitive response (Butterfuss & Kendeou, 2020). As a professor, I have experienced a few misconceptions about the generalized population of students who suffer from a mental disability. For one, I never knew that depression could alter memory status or interfere with working memory, thus creating misconceptions of the material (Geisner et al., 2015). Thus, this impedes the student’s ability to do the required assessments and examinations without presenting with difficulty. It certainly has been a learning experience and has provided insight on how students with and without disabilities learn new material in the classroom. References Butterfuss, R., & Kendeou, P. (2020). Reducing interference from misconceptions: The role of inhibition in knowledge revision. Journal of Educational Psychology, 112(4), 782–794. https://doi.org/10.1037/edu0000385 Geisner, I. Unit 5 Discussion 2 Due to the influence of the media, movies, and television shows, there are several misconceptions about mental illnesses. Hollywood has displayed misconceptions about treatment of mental illnesses as well, or how people with specific mental disabilities behave, causing widespread misbeliefs about individuals who suffer from these diseases. According to research (Basterfield et al., 2020), college students have highly biased beliefs about individuals who suffer from mental illness. From the questionnaires and surveys given to psychology undergraduate students, many believe the misconceptions presented by the media about mental disease. Not only did the psychology undergraduate students believe the inaccurate treatment or symptoms of the mental disease but thought the individuals suffering from the disease must be incapable of functioning on a high level. For example, many undergraduates
believed schizophrenics were violent and autistic individuals were super intelligent. These beliefs, of course, are biased due to the influence of the media and how mental illness is presented. In the Unit 7 assignment, I will demonstrate how Memory, Knowledge, and Language is essential to correct misconceptions about the mentally disabled population. With further education and open mindedness, individuals will come to learn that those who suffer from mental illness are not what the media presents them to be.
