The two theories I chose for this assignment were Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s. Jean Paget was a developmental psychologist whose theory states children’s cognitive abilities develop through four stages. These stages include the sensorimotor stage (Birth to 12-18 months), preoperational stage (Ages 2 to 7), concrete operational stage (Ages 7 to 11), and formal operational stage (Adolescence to Adulthood). Each of the stages describes how children of different ages think and respond cognitively. The second theory I chose was from a psychologist named Lev Vygotsky. The Zone of Proximal Development was produced by Vygotsky, who states learning is a process that comes from social interaction and collaboration. This theory is classified into three zones. Zone one is something a child cannot do unassisted. Zone two is something a child can do with some assistance. Zone three is something a child can do independently without any assistance. Though both theories are connected to cognitive development, there are a few differences between the two. For starters, Piaget’s theory believes in individual development, whereas Vygotsky’s theory believes in the development of a person through social interaction. Vygotsky’s theory leans more on the people around us who assist in the development of a child, whereas Piaget’s theory is individual growth from the exploration of one’s surroundings. Another difference, I noticed between the two theories was continuous versus discontinuous development. It seems as if Piaget’s theory suggests discontinuous development as they are broken up into four stages. Meanwhile, Vygotsky’s could be considered continuous since it is ongoing. One similarity I found was both theories discussed child cognitive development. Both theories also suggest development growth is made in stages. Piaget’s theory has four stages and Vygotsky’s theory has three zones of development. Finally, both theories suggest children's development can grow from experiences.
