Worksheet on Experiments A. THE EFFECT OF BACKGROUND MUSIC ON MEMORY Participants were divided into two groups. Both groups were given a list of unrelated words to study for five minutes. Then the lists were taken away. After a delay of two more minutes, the participants were asked to write down as many words as they could recall. The only difference between the procedures for the two groups was that Group 1 had Beethoven's "Sonata Pathetique" playing during both the learning and recall phases of the experiment. THE EFFECT OF OTHERS' PRESENCE ON THE OFFERING OF HELP Participants were ushered into a room, either alone or in groups of four. After they had been in the room for two minutes, a tape was played in the adjacent room. It played the sound of a man groaning and collapsing. Independent variable: Other's Presence Dependent variable: Offering of Help Control group: Alone in the room Experimental group: Groups of four C. "THE EFFECT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON VIDEO GAME PERFORMANCE Participants were asked to play a complex new video game. Half of the participants (Group 1) were told nothing about their success relative to other participants. The other half (Group 2) were told that they had done much better than most people who learn the game. Then all participants played the game once more. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PEER COUNSELING IN DEALING WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
Twenty-five adolescent males who had criminal records (Group 1) were placed in a six-week program during which they met three times a week with someone of their own age who had never been in trouble with the law. Another 25 males, matched for criminal record, age, and background (Group 2) were not put through the program.
