2 The assessment tool used to investigate is the Severity Measure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder Child Age 11 to 17 (Carske et al., 2013.). This tool was chosen as research indicates a rise in the rate of children self-reporting an anxiety disorder (Klein et al.,2023). Additionally, medical diagnoses of anxiety disorders increased from 6% in 2011 to 12.9% in 2018 (Wiens et al., 2020). As such, this is a helpful tool for social workers to be familiar with as they work with children with generalized anxiety disorders. This tool is helpful for use with adolescents as it is subjective and to be completed by the adolescent after a medical diagnosis of anxiety is received by a qualified practitioner (Carske et al., 2013). This assessment is used at regular intervals to document the frequency of symptoms, which may incline the clinician to provide specific treatment modalities to address specific problem areas. Another benefit to using this assessment tool is how short it is, thus requiring minimal time to complete. Since this tool is subjective, the client must have the insight to answer the questions appropriately. If the young person tends to exaggerate or dismiss symptoms, the responses may not accurately represent the severity of anxiety experienced. Additionally, since it is self- reported, the client must be motivated to complete this questionnaire regularly. Finally, some clients may need help understanding the symptoms due to developmental delays, which may result in inaccurate responses. Thus, clinicians must provide clarification when warranted.
