The first article I read discussed the use of videoconferencing at the onset of Covid 19 for competency to stand trial evaluations by forensic examiners. The authors surveyed practicing forensic psychologists to obtain data on their responses to questions surrounding their thoughts on concerns and benefits regarding videoconferencing for competency to stand trial evaluations. The majority of the examiners had only utilized videoconferencing for the first time for evaluation purposes after the start of the pandemic. The forensic examiners expressed their concern in the potential for a decrease in relying on the results of the evaluation done via teleconferencing versus in-person evaluations. The majority of the evaluators also agreed that the choice of videoconferencing offered the potential of the evaluation process being more efficient for them, and also agreed that evaluation wait times wouldn’t be as long with utilizing videoconferencing. The ability to accurately assess mental health symptoms and feigning were listed as the highest of concern (Trupp et al., 2021). The second article I read explained the neuropsychological process that lays the foundation for the psychological concepts in competency to stand trial. The authors examined two groups of defendants committed to a maximum-security psychiatric facility: clinical judgements of competence and clinical judgements of incompetence, and measured neuropsychological cognitive, social intelligence, and declarative memory measures. With the application of the Wechsler adult intelligence scale, both groups showed parallel levels of depressed cognitive intelligence based on their IQ levels reaching the height of the borderline range. When comparing social intelligence and episodic memory, specifically tests of verbal memory with the use of listening that displayed heavily relied upon methods of encoding, isolation, and retrieval of the narrative content, the clinically competent defendants scored much higher than their counterparts. The article expressed that the evaluation of the specific methods of measuring social intelligence and episodic memory offers a neuropsychological future in better assessing, understanding, and the restoration of competence to stand trial (Aveson et al., 2023) References:
