1 PSY 108 Project One: Position Paper Psychologists have argued that the nature- nurture debate involves the extent in which human behavior is either genetic (inherited) or learned (acquired) influences. "Nature is what we think of as pre-wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors while nurture is generally taken as the influence of external factors after conception i.e. the product of exposure, experience, and learning on an individual," (Zaky, 2015). Studies have proven that human behavior can be influenced by both nature- and nurture, however, nurture has a stronger influence on human behavior due to outside influences that can change ones beliefs. I believe nurture has more impact on human behavior. Nativists believe most of human behavior is obtained through genetics, inherited from their parents. "Their basic assumption is that the characteristics of the human species as a whole are a product of evolution and that individual differences are due to each person's unique genetic code," (Mcleod, 2023). Empiricists believe most of human behavior is obtained through outside influences, essentially starting with a blank slate after birth. "From this point of view, psychological characteristics and behavioral differences that emerge through infancy and childhood are the results of learning. It is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development, and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological," (Mcleod, 2023). My arguement is that human behavior can be trained and learned, which allows humans to become anything, regardless of their genetic background. As children we learn from our environment, which eiher can come from our parents, guardians, siblings, friends, or other outside influences. These outside influences will guide our perspectives and beliefs, like spiritual beliefs, concious and unconcious beliefs, rational beliefs, and behaviroial beliefs. "For example,
2 when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has received, language comes from imitating the speech of others, and cognitive development depends on the degree of stimulation in the environment and, more broadly, on the civilization within which the child is reared," (Zaky, 2015). As we grow, our beliefs may change, our behaviors may change, this is due to outside influences that guide us in one direction or another. "It has been found that, there exist minimal instances where behavior can be taken to be entirely caused by nurture or entirely as a result of nature," (IvyPanda, 2021). Human behavior is caused by both nurture and nature. Genes will affect human behavior to a certain point. But it is nurture and outside influences that will guide and individuals' behavior over their lifetime. These behaviors can and mostly will change as one grows. Nurture will having a stronger impact on human behavior, over time, then nature will.
