Isabelle Sanderson Jim McAlhaney PSY-150-PFA1 September 28, 2023 Question 1: Describe the controversy over Skinner's views of human behavior, and identify some ways to apply operant conditioning principles at school, at work, and at home. The controversy around Skinner's views of human behavior is that Skinner believed that organisms learn the world through the effects their actions have on other things, or by watching the effect someone else's consequences has on that person. The idea is that when a person gets positive reinforcement they believe to add to those actions, then when they get a negative response they take away from their actions. For example if you make your mom breakfast in bed and you make a mess of the kitchen while doing it, she may be happy about the food and yell at you about the kitchen, so next time you keep the kitchen cleaner while you're cooking and make her food still. Question 2: A. Define classical conditioning and behaviorism, and describe the basic components of classical conditioning. A classical conditioning and behaviorism is defined as when you hear a bell you know it's lunchtime and this brings out the conditioned response of salivating. It is the process of associating sounds with events that will happen daily and the rats' bodies respond to it.
B. Describe the process of operant conditioning, including the shaping procedure. The process of operant conditioning is to target a behavior and punish or reinforce it to strengthen or weaken that behavior. The shaping procedure is when you reward progress in the subject to keep them on the right track to the target behavior you want them to exhibit.
