Sean Park Prof. Phillip Kellman Psych 85 Oct 19, 2023 Week 3 Reaction Page (Oct. 17) Perception-Based Knowledge Representations (Mental Imaging) I think this week’s reading was the most straight forward and easy to understand. Mental imaging was always a subject that I was personally curious about. I remember being fascinated with how some of my friends reproduced mental images with striking accuracy and precision to the real space. I also think it helped to understand the text because professor Kellman mentioned on Tuesday how many people think visual perception is the same thing as spatial perception, but in reality spatial perception can be formed using a collection of different stimuli. The experiment of Farah, Hammond, Levine, and Calvanio (1988) that helped support the difference in spatial imagery and visual imagery was most interesting to me. It was helpful to see the results of patients with impairments in specific areas of the brain that related to each spatial and visual imaging ability. I always equated the two as one and the same, but this experiment delineated the differences well for me. The Chambers and Reisberg (1985) experiment of the processing of reversible figures also helped me understand the difference. I liked how this week’s reading had a lot of images and descriptions that were used in various experiments to determine how mental imagery works. It was engaging to try them for myself and reflect on the mental images that my mind was creating, and to compare my mental image to the results of the experiments. I found myself participating in the mental rotation experiment, egocentric vs allocentric orientation experiment, and Franklin and Tversky’s word description of spatial structure experiment. I think I have the best understanding of this reading out of all the readings done so far.
