Describe the cognitive and non-cognitive abilities relating to Emotional Intelligence. Provide an example of how you might use EQ in your daily life. Respond to at least two of your peers for this posting with suggestions that might work for them within their daily lives. Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. Emotional intelligence refers to a person’s ability to recognize their own emotions as well as the emotions of others while they behave in a way that demonstrates their emotional understanding (Baack, 2017) There are non-cognitive and cognitive abilities within emotional intelligence. Cognitive skills are the skills your brain uses to think, learn, remember and pay attention. Non-cognitive skills deal with motivation, integrity and interpersonal interaction. Non-cognitive skills sometimes require using cognitive skills . Emotional intelligence deals with non-cognitive skills more than cognitive skills but since the two tie together emotional intelligence involves both. Emotionally intelligent leaders tend to be more effective because they are conscious about and responsive to their own emotions and the emotions of others. Leaders who are capable of contolling their emotions can interact with people more effectively, manage coflict and make better decisions. Leaders with strong emotional intelligence build and maintain strong working relations which are built on respect, trust and greater employee satisfaction (Phipps & Prieto, 2017). Emotional intelligence can be used in interactions at work because it will help you be more cognizant of others and how they feel so that you can make the best decisions. If you understand people it makes it easier to lead them and motivate them even in what might be an unpleasant task.
