PSY 328 Module Two Journal Template First, you may want to revisit your submission for the Module One Journal assignment. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Describe what a psychoanalyst like Freud or Jung would be looking for in the responses to a projective test like the Thematic Apperception Test. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. When assessing the responses to a projective test like TAT, a psychoanalyst like Freud would be focused on the hidden messages within the answers, such as suppressed feelings or emotions. Our textbook states that “psychoanalysis emphasizes the dominant role of the unconscious process in human experience and behavior. To psychoanalysts, a living, thinking, and acting individual is always governed by a host of hidden, internal forces, which should be available for scientific scrutiny” (Shiraev, 2017). Meaning, Freud would try to create a connection between the unconscious and the experiences that marked the individual’s childhood since psychoanalysis emphasizes early childhood experiences and how they impact an individual. Jung on the other hand would focus on detecting archetypes within the given responses since his theory is that said archetypes “are the content of the collective unconscious that consist of images of the primordial (elemental, ancient) character. Their archetypes manifest in three universal ways: dreams, fantasies, and delusions” (Shiraev, 2017). Using the lens of a psychoanalyst, reflect on your Module One Journal responses by answering the following questions in 2 to 5 sentences each: o Describe what role your unconscious might have played in your responses. Are there any defense mechanisms present in your story? Referring to my responses to the Activity One Journal, I would say that my unconscious allowed me to connect with the individuals in the image. A defense mechanism that can be present in my story is Rationalization which is defined as an attempt to find reason for behaviors. I related it to my experiences when dealing with friends who canceled plans on me without telling me, or if someone is repeatedly doing something I don’t agree with and that’s to observe and rationalize why they made those choices. o Describe how you characterized any underlying conflicts present in your story. Think about drives and the parts of personality (id, ego superego) in your response. The way I characterized any underlying conflicts present in my story was influenced by the ego. The ego follows the reality principle so in the case of the individual listening to his friend, he may feel angry or disappointed in his friend and wants to act upon his id, but his ego is telling him to listen. o Describe how you characterized the interactions of the people in your story. What could this tell us about attachment and relationships? I characterized their interactions by focusing on their body language and facial expressions. They appear to have a negative connection characterized by their disinterested expression and slumped body 1
language against the lockers. What this tells me is that there is a slight strain on the relationship with the individual he’s talking to because he’s not showing innate interest, more ‘I guess I have to do this.’ o Describe how much your own life experience informed the story you told. I’ve mentioned this before, I’ve worked with and dealt with many individuals who’ve bailed out on plans whether they informed me or not. Often if they spoke to me again they’d try to explain their reasoning or apologize, some don’t. But I see myself in this scenario where I’m tired of it happening over and over, and even if I want to express something negative, I know it’s better to listen to what they have to say and move on. After considering the role of the unconscious and projection in the story you told, describe another interpretation for your image. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Another way to interpret the image is that it’s an early Monday morning. His friend is gossiping about events that happened over the weekend, but the individual leaning up against the locker is tired from playing video games late into the night, so he tries to listen to his friend the best he can despite being uninterested. Describe what a greater awareness of projection means for other interactions you might have with people in a social or professional setting. Your response should be 2 to 5 sentences in length. Greater awareness of projection will allow me to focus on the perspective of the people that surround me instead of my own. It will give me the ability to connect to their reality instead of making connections to my own, as projecting my needs onto others brings no benefit to the progress of the relationship whether it’s academic, social, or professional. 2
