Madison Vanarsdale PSY/275 Dr. Traci Feek 07/31/2023 Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder Schizophrenia. “Cancer for the mind” as they call it. Why do they call it that? What is it? Why are we afraid of it? How does it make you act? Feel? or even talk? Are there ways that we can help? We know schizophrenia as voices and seeing things that aren’t there but, do we know what it’s like for a person with schizophrenia on a day-to-day basis? In this article I’m going to discuss the Development, Progression, Physiological and behavioral features of schizophrenia. The things that we already know vs. the things that we don’t. Development of Schizophrenia Let’s begin with the development of schizophrenia. The exact causes of schizophrenia are unknown but, Researchers believe that it is a combination of physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors that can make a person develop this condition. For example, pregnancy and delivery complications, slow neuromotor development and deviant cognitive and academic performance. Theres are just SOME. Of the things that we are beginning to understand about the wide range of this condition. Some people may be prone to it, meaning there can be an emotional or stressful event that has happened to trigger an episode. While for others, it is just a genetic makeup that has run in the family for generations. We are left with many questions. What makes this happen? How will we know? Progression of Schizophrenia To begin, there are 3 phases of schizophrenia. Phase 1, when they start to show up, is called prodromal. They may seem nervous, anxious or have difficulty concentrating. Then there is Phase 2, the active stage where symptoms can be more noticeable. They may be talking to themselves or have firm beliefs that are easily proved wrong. Finally, the last stage is the residual phase. This is where a person
Madison Vanarsdale PSY/275 Dr. Traci Feek 07/31/2023 might start to recover but may still have some symptoms. This condition can develop over the course of a month, weeks or even just suddenly. The nature and pattern of schizophrenia is still unknown and is being learned about today. We know the stereotypes of schizophrenia but, do we know the true facts or just made-up stories? Physiological symptoms Schizophrenia has been heard and talked about for as long as I can remember. It’s always said that they hear voices and see things that aren’t there but that’s not aways the case. You can develop this condition from something traumatic happening in your life. For example, losing your job, a divorce or even abuse. Did you know that the active symptoms of schizophrenia can be hallucinations/delusions, disorganized speech, trouble thinking and lack of motivation? Scientists believe that people with schizophrenia have an imbalance of the neurotransmitter’s serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate. These neurotransmitters allow nerve cells in the brain to send messages to each other. Which is why when they are having an episode, they act and communicate the ways that they do. Behavioral feature The behavioral features of schizophrenia can differ from person to person. Some common behavioral features are paranoid thoughts or voices in their head, unusual physical behavior, slow movement, poor grooming and many others. It is strictly based on the person and how they choose to handle it. For instance, social engagement, which is important for health and well-being, can be difficult. for people with schizophrenia. It is reported that they are often lonely after those events because, usings words and sentences don’t make as much sense to others. However, there are many things you can do to help a loved one with schizophrenia. Encourage them to schedule regular doctor’s appointments, remind them about their medications and try to help them stay happy and heathy. The less stress the better.
