Do you agree with the DSM-5 eliminating the diagnoses of Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) and morphing them into one diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)? Why or why not? First and foremost, it's important to note that, as a behavior technician who works with children who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), I personally find the topic of autism to be very personal. As someone who is responsible for improving the spectrum of the kids I work with, I believe it was a good idea to label a variety of developmental issues as ASD. Given that Asperger's and PDD-NOS may be subjective and may result in variations in diagnosis and access to resources, the morphing process it is an opportunity to provide a more accurate and inclusive diagnosis that recognized the diversity of persons with autism. I believed that individuals would have equal access to support and treatments whit these diagnoses being combined under ASD. I think Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD- NOS), and childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) were stealing a diagnosis of families that have lower functioning children and adults with autism, who carry so much more each day. As an RBT I believe that combining these diagnoses simplifies the diagnostic procedure, making it easier to evaluate and diagnose autistic people. It has been demonstrated that this change allowed for more people to have fair access to the resources and interventions they require, such as ABA therapy. Whether one agrees with this decision or not often depends on their perspective and the specific needs of individuals with autism.
