Identify two strengths you bring to addictions counseling and how you gained those strengths. Two strengths that I believe I bring to addictions counseling are openness and understanding. I think these are key strengths in working with clients with addiction as the stigma attached to addiction is high for many. I think these clients in particular, as all clients, will appreciate and feel comforted by these qualities. I would say that I gained these strengths in childhood as I was a listening ear for my biological father who suffered from mental illness. From a young age, I have learned that allowing space and actively listening to a person with openness and understanding could make a world of difference. Identify one area where you might struggle in the field of addictions counseling (examples might be personal experiences, bias, lack of education, etc.), and why this area might be a challenge for you. I would say that I have seen addiction with my father, but I don’t believe that would give me a challenge. There is a person in my life that I am not the most fond of who has a history of addiction. I would say that would be the one place where I would watch for bias to creep in. If someone reminded me of that person. Also, at this point a lack of education as I have not studied addiction as of yet. Does your state/country have certification or licensure for addictions counseling? Provide the website if so. In Ohio, the requirements to become an addictions counselor does not seem very strenuous. There are four levels of counselors, with the highest level requiring a Masters in Behavioral Science. Share whether addictions counseling is a field you would consider for your counseling career, and explain why or why not. Addictions counseling is not a field that I was seeking out but it isn’t either a field that I am avoiding. I am sure that many of my clients will either have issues with addiction or have been touched by addiction in one way or another in their past. I am looking forward to learning more about addiction and addiction counseling.
