Research Breakdown Worksheet Directions: Choose one of the following two articles, and then complete the worksheet below. Be sure to write in full sentences and paragraphs and to properly cite and reference your work. Self-Serving Bias: Sanjuan, P., & Magallares, A. (2014). Coping strategies as mediating variables between self-serving attributional bias and subjective well-being. Journal of Happiness Studies, 15 (2), 442–453. Self-Regulation: Critcher, C. R., & Ferguson, M. J. (2016). “Whether I like it or not, it’s important”: Implicit importance of means predicts self-regulatory persistence and success. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 110 (6), 818–839. The full reference for your article I chose to read the article “Coping strategies as mediating variables between self- serving attributional bias and subjective well-being.” Sanjuan, P., & Magallares, A. (2014). Coping strategies as mediating variables between self- serving attributional bias and subjective well-being. Journal of Happiness Studies, 15 (2), 442– 453. The hypothesis or research question (in your own words, not quoted). Include in-text citation. The hypothesis of the study posits that individuals exhibiting self-serving attributional bias (SSAB), characterized by attributing positive situations to internal, stable, and global causes, and negative situations to external, unstable, and specific causes, are likely to experience higher levels of psychological well-being (Sanjuan & Magallares, 2014). Additionally, the study suggests that the relationship between SSAB and well-being could be influenced by individuals' coping strategies. The researchers hypothesize that coping strategies, specifically problem-solving and positive cognitive restructuring, may mediate the association between SSAB and well-being, thereby shedding light on the way in which SSAB impacts individuals' psychological wellbeing (Sanjuan & Magallares, 2014). The researchers’ conclusion (in your own words in fully developed paragraph, not quoted). Include in-text citation. The study found that SSAB, characterized by attributing achievements to internal abilities and attributing setbacks to external factors, indeed plays a role in shaping subjective wellbeing and life satisfaction (Sanjuan & Magallares, 2014). In addition, the researchers concluded that the way individuals handle challenges through problem solving and positive cognitive restructuring plays a crucial role in the relationship between SSAB and wellbeing. Furthermore, the study highlighted that consciously facing challenges instead of avoiding them also contributes to strengthening this relationship (Sanjuan & Magallares, 2014). Essentially, the findings emphasize how SSAB and coping strategies interact and shape our 1
emotional well-being. The researchers concluded that well-being promotion programs should actively encourage healthy attributional styles, with an emphasis on encouraging problem solving and positive cognitive restructuring strategies (Sanjuan & Magallares, 2014). Describe the research method in 2–3 sentences (in your own words, not quoted). Include in- text citation. Sanjuan & Magallares (2014) employed a quantitative research method to explore the relationships among SSAB, coping strategies, and subjective wellbeing. 205 participants, consisting of 90 males and 115 females with a mean age of 35.99, voluntarily took part in the research (Sanjuan & Magallares 2014). Data was collected through surveys that measured participants' levels of SSAB, coping strategies, and subjective wellbeing components. The researchers then utilized path analysis to analyze the data and examine the interconnections between these variables. Path analysis is used to assess complex relationships between variables and estimate direct and indirect effects within a theoretical model (Streiner, 2005 ). In at least one fully developed paragraph, describe how this research could apply to your professional or daily life. In my personal life, the insights from Sanjuan and Magallares (2014) could have a direct impact on how I handle challenges and foster my overall well-being. For instance, knowing the significance of self-serving attributional bias (SSAB), I could consciously work on attributing my achievements to my efforts and skills, while reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth using problem-solving and positive cognitive strategies. For instance, if I faced a setback at work, instead of attributing it solely to external factors, such as bad luck, I could examine how my approach might be improved and take proactive steps to address the issue. Understanding the implications of avoidance-based coping strategies could encourage me to avoid the tendency to shy away from difficulties or unfamiliar situations. By avoiding uncomfortable situations, I might miss out on valuable experiences and personal growth. The findings of Sanjuan and Magallares (2014) could encourage me to confront challenges, such as relationship issues, head-on rather than evading them. Equipped with the knowledge that avoidance-based coping strategies can counteract the positive effects of self-serving attributional bias (SSAB) on well-being, I could actively seek solutions and communication in these situations. By interpreting the findings of this research and integrating proactive coping strategies into my daily life, I could nurture a positive mindset and enhance my resilience, ultimately contributing to a higher level of wellbeing and life satisfaction.
