PSYC 201, LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT NAME: Hannah Shreve INSTRUCTOR: JACKSON COMPREHENSIVE ASSIGNMENT, STEP 1 SELECTING A SCENARIO AND A THEORETICAL ORIENTATION (15 points available) As described in the introduction and overview document that you just read, in this step you will select one of the three scenarios below and a theoretical perspective through which to address the scenario. You will then provide a detailed explanation for why you think this theoretical perspective can help you address the problems described in the scenario. Here are the three scenarios: 1) 10 year old boy with an undiagnosed learning disability in a third grade classroom “Timmy” is a young and energetic boy who is a very eager to interact with other students and his teacher. Lately, Timmy’s teacher has been reporting to his mother that he is not focusing on his work and has become disruptive in the classroom to the point that the teacher has had to remove him from the classroom and place him in a special resource room while his peers continue to learn in the regular classroom environment. Timmy’s mother is furious because Timmy should be getting to spend time with his peers in the same learning environment as them and the teacher has decided to do this without consulting anyone. The mother’s perspective is obviously that the school should be providing more support for Timmy and figuring out how to help him. The teacher’s perspective is that she has an obligation to help the greatest number of her students succeed, and Timmy is interfering with her ability to help the rest of the students. 2) 35 year old single mother who is impoverished and struggling to care for three children “Lisa” is a single mom who was recently divorced from a man who struggled with opiate and alcohol addiction for decades. He has left Lisa and their three children alone and does not intend to reconnect with them given the overwhelming influence of his addiction. Lisa already worked two full-time jobs to support her young children of 3, 5, and 7 years of age before the husband left them. Now Lisa faces the challenge of how to support them on her income and how to provide them the parental attention that they currently need in middle childhood and will continue to need as they approach adolescence. Lisa and her three children live in subsidized housing in an area of town that has high crime and widespread drug abuse. Lisa has been considering how she can improve her life and the future of her children by perhaps taking some classes at the local community college, but she has no idea how to do this when she is just concerned about putting food on the table each day for her three kids. 3) 78 year old man who is widowed, isolated in his home and is experiencing some physical problems as well as signs of dementia “Bob” lost his wife to lung cancer just 7 months ago. He and his wife had lived in the same middle-income neighborhood for 50 years, getting married in their 20s, having two children who eventually moved away to start families of their own, and growing old together in a relatively stable area with good neighbors. Many of those neighbors now have moved away or have died. Last week, one of the remaining good neighbors noticed that Bob was limping badly when he took the trash to the curb. The neighbor also noticed that Bob placed the trash can in the middle of the street instead of by the curb where he had always placed it for decades. He also noticed that Bob wandered around his house and tried to open a window instead of going back through his garage. The neighbor doesn’t know how to approach Bob since they have mainly been acquaintances, but have never been close friends. The neighbor is worried that Bob doesn’t have any family close by and that he may harm himself at some point either deliberately or by accident.
WHICH SCENARIO DO YOU CHOOSE? 10-year-old boy with an undiagnosed learning disability in a third-grade classroom. WHAT DEVELOPMENTAL THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE ARE YOU CHOOSING TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM? (NOTE THAT YOU MAY PICK MORE THAN ONE, BUT NO MORE THAN TWO): I am choosing the (cognitive) information-processing theory to address this scenario/problem along with the behaviorism theory by Watson and Skinner. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE OR PERSPECTIVE CAN HELP YOU ADDRESS THE PROBLEM? (MUST BE 200 WORDS OR MORE FOR CREDIT): I chose Timmy, the 10-year-old boy who is said to be "disruptive" in his class by his teacher and placed in a segregated room. He is very energetic and excited to get to know his peers and teacher, but it gets misread as intentional defiance and being rude—when that is not the case. The theoretical perspective information- processing theory can help address the problem with the 10-year-old boy and prevent him from being separated from his peers which would further his development and learning. This theory promotes "thought... [development to increase] in efficiency at handling information," as supported in chapter 1 of the textbook "Human Development: A Life-Span View, 7e," by Robert Kail. Kail also goes into (on a table) how this theory is good for individual differences in universal structures. Secondly, as said in Timmy's 'blurb,' his teacher states he is not focusing well on his work in the class environment due to his frequent outbursts of energy. To address that issue, Timmy's mother, teacher, or the school, could possibly all find a way to work together on getting a behaviorist specialist, That way, he will be able to stay caught up in work and the adults will all do their part in ensuring Timmy gets the education he needs to grow and further his brain development.
