LaJoyina Thompson Smarter Decisions through Psychology 09/12/2022 Answering the questions in this case study assignment, using your problem-solving and self and social awareness skills and what you have learned about personality traits and emotions. Remember, you are to help Monica calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem. You should write a paragraph-length response (5–7 sentences) for each question to receive credit for this assignment. You may use your Sophia tutorials as a resource. Question 1: What are the Big 5 personality traits? Name and describe each of them. 1. Openness to experience, a person’s willingness to try something new and experience new things. 2. Conscientiousness deals with organization and disciple as well as the level of hard work one is willing to obtain. People on the high end tend to be more organized and hard- working. At the same time, those on the lower side are slackers. 3. Extroversion deals with the social side of sweet, easy-going, more outgoing shows and taking the initiative. At the same time, others are more passive, the go alone to get alone type. 4. Agreeable high-end people are more open, friendly, and acceptable; they are not as confrontational as low-ended, untrusting, untrustworthy individuals who are a little distant. 5. Neuroticism deals more with emotional stability through experience. Some are more confident and secure than others, who constantly worry about one thing or another. Question 2: Consider the different approaches to the project taken by both Monica and Jennifer. On which of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ? Discuss these differences in their personality traits. Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeable, Neuroticism Jennifer has already taken the initiative to work on their project by even sending a to-do list to Monica and wants to do well. At the same time, Monica, on the other hand, is not as organized as Jennifer and feels uncomfortable about the to-do list. She felt that Jennifer had already made herself their team leader and felt as if Jennifer was trying to micromanage her. She worries about the project and doesn’t feel she has anything to offer since Jennifer has things covered. In the past, Monica has tried expressing how she feels but has a hard time doing so Page 1 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.2
Question 3: Using what you learned about emotions, what advice would you give to Monica? Describe a strategy Monica can use to manage her feelings and complete the project, Communication is the key; she needs to talk to Jennifer and let her know exactly how she feels. And take the opportunity to showcase some of her ideas. Sometimes it is hard for some conversations face to face. If this is true, then maybe she could email or text. Stay calm and realize that she is a valued team member as well. Question 4: If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like Monica? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer? Explain how your experience or expertise can resolve a similar workplace conflict I am very confident. This shows that Monica lacks self-confidence and could benefit from practicing a few skills. Skills like communication, self, social awareness, productivity, result- driven, and initiative. There was a time when I was Monica and had to learn to speak up and speak out. I was the go-alone-to-get-alone type. I would agree because I didn’t want to disagree. I worried about what others said and what they thought about me to the point that it started making me physically and psychologically sick. Until I had to develop the theory that I am just as good as anybody else. I started believing in myself as well as developing self- confidence and was able to increase productivity better than I thought. I stopped feeling intimidated and inferior. I was able to earn a promotion. Page 2 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.2
