Psych. 225: Developmental Psych. Fall, 2023 SOCIAL POLICY PROPOSAL Due: Dec. 5 For this assignment, you should either (1) evaluate a current social policy pertaining to children, or (2) propose a social policy on your own with the objective of achieving our goal, as developmental scientists, of optimizing child development. Social policies can be laws or guidelines at the local, state, or national levels. There are many domains and questions from which you can choose, such as: Teenage driving laws (age of obtaining a license, texting while driving) Use of spanking as a disciplinary technique Creating effective after school programs Restricting access to violent video games or social media (TikTok) Rules on adoption or foster care How to teach non-native English speaking children Life sentences for juvenile offenders Investment in early childhood education School start times Gender-affirming care for transgender children These are only examples . Stay in touch with the news, look at the SRCD Social Policy section at www.srcd.org , read op-ed pieces in the newspaper, and think about topics pertaining to children that have come up in this or other classes or in conversations with family members and friends. Once you have decided on your general topic area, start reading the literature in developmental science to learn what researchers have to say about this topic. This process should lead you to be able to write the following: 1. State the policy you are evaluating or proposing in clear and specific terms. Try to focus on one element rather than many. 2. Provide the results of at least four research studies published in psychology journals that support your position. Describe what the researchers did and found, and then show how they lead you to your proposal or your position on an existing policy. 3. Wrap up your argument in a clear, persuasive, and cogent way. Plan on a paper of about 5 to 7 pages, plus a reference section detailing your sources. I am looking for a proposal that makes sense , is written in a convincing manner , and that is based on the findings of empirical research .
