PSY 211 Module Eight Activity Template In the Module Eight Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview, Scenario, and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Applying Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is perspective-taking so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o How might you seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view inspire her to advocate for herself? Applying Piaget's concept of perspective-taking, it is crucial in my conversation with Jasmine because it allows me to understand her point of view fully. Perspective-taking enables me to step into Jasmine's shoes, seeing the situation as she does, and empathizing with her feelings of inequity. By truly grasping her perspective, I can inspire Jasmine to advocate for herself because she'll know that I understand and support her concerns. When she feels heard and validated, she's more likely to have the confidence to address the pay inequity issue. Applying Goleman’s concept of empathy in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is empathy so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o In Jasmine’s case, what do you believe is the main difference between perspective- taking and empathy? Empathy, as described by Goleman, is essential in my conversation with Jasmine because it goes beyond understanding her perspective; it involves feeling the emotions she is experiencing. In Jasmine's case, the main difference between perspective-taking and empathy is that empathy includes an emotional component. It's not just comprehending her situation logically but also connecting with her on an emotional level. When I empathize with her frustration and disappointment about the pay disparity, it reinforces my support and validates her feelings. Applying Gilligan’s views on morality in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is moral reasoning so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o According to Gilligan, which type of morality best aligns with Jasmine’s situation: care- based morality, justice-based morality, or both? Explain your response. In terms of Gilligan's views on morality, moral reasoning is critical in my conversation with Jasmine because it helps us assess the fairness and justice of her situation. According to Gilligan, care-based morality emphasizes empathy, compassion, and concern for others' well-being. In Jasmine's case, both care-based and justice-based morality are relevant. Care-based morality aligns with her situation as it emphasizes empathy and concern for her well-being in the face of an unjust pay inequity. Justice-based morality also applies because it highlights the need for fairness and equality in the workplace, which is precisely what Jasmine is striving for. As you wrap up your conversation with Jasmine, integrate the perspectives of Piaget, Goleman, and Gilligan by answering the following questions: 1
o According to Piaget, what is one factor that could inhibit your ability to take Jasmine’s perspective? How might Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigate this factor? o How does Goleman’s concept of empathy relate to Piaget’s concept of perspective- taking in your conversation with Jasmine? o How do Gilligan’s views on morality relate to Goleman’s concept of empathy in your conversation with Jasmine? As I wrap up my conversation with Jasmine, I see that according to Piaget, my previous association with the restaurant could hinder my ability to take Jasmine's perspective. In my position as sous-chef at the same place, I could have preconceived notions or loyalty. Goleman's concept of empathy, however, allows me to separate my personal biases from the situation, allowing me to connect with Jasmine emotionally. As a complement to Piaget's perspective-taking, Goleman's concept of empathy is complementary. Unlike perspective-taking, empathy explores the emotional aspects of someone's viewpoint, strengthening our connection and support. As I discussed with Jasmine, Gilligan's moral views are closely related to Goleman's notion of empathy. Empathy aligns with care-based morality because it addresses emotional and relational aspects of moral dilemmas. I can support Jasmine effectively at work when I empathize with her concerns and emotions. 2
