Social Emotional Learning Self-Awareness and Academic Success - Self-perceived academic confidence may lay the groundwork for future academic success o A study of first graders revealed a positive correlation between a student’s self- perceived academic competence and their performance in reading and math later on o TK-Elementary study: children who felt competent in academic areas were more likely to seek out opportunities to engage in that area of academics Self-Management and Academic Success - Preschoolers’ emotional regulation (high to low) predicted kindergarten achievement - 1 st grader inhibitory control (walk on a line, trace a figure) predicted 3 rd grade reading scores - Head Toes Knees Shoulders task- measure oh behavioral regulation HTKS task - Kindergarteners who perform more efficiently on HTKS in the fall showed greater achievement in the Spring especially in math Social Awareness and Academic Success - Emotion knowledge (not regulation, but awareness of emotions) in preschoolers had a positive relationship to their pre-academic achievement o This study also found that emotion knowledge predicted later classroom adjustment, verbal ability, emotional lability, and emotional regulation past preschool - Another study found emotional knowledge in 5-year-olds predicted their social and academic competence at the age of 9 Responsible Decision Making and Academic Success - Preschool aged children’s responses to hypothetical social dilemma were related to their current teachers’ ratings of their school adjustment and their kindergarten teachers’ rating of their academic performance - 4 th -6 th graders’ social problem skills were related to their grade point average - Choosing a prosocial response = measure of responsible Relationship/Social Skills and Academic Success - A study of 3 rd graders showed that their initial social competence AND improvements in social competence predicted their end of the year grades in reading and math - Another study found that self, peer, and teacher ratings of prosocial behavior in the 3 rd grade predicted academic achievement (grades) 5 years later SEL Development - It’s important to note that these stages are interconnected and overlapping - SEL is not a linear process, children work on various aspects of these stages simultaneously EQ – Emotional Intelligence Review - What is EQ o Self-smarts (self-awareness, self-management)
o Social smarts (social skills, social awareness) What is communication? - Communication is transferring or sharing information from one person/place to another - Can be verbal, nonverbal, or written Social Skills in SEL - Relationship/social skills is one of the most complicated components of Emotional Intelligence - Having proper social skills are necessary to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and due to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups - This includes the capacities to communicate clearly o Listen actively o Cooperate o Work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively o Navigate settings with differing social Social Skills in Development of Children - The development of social skills typically occurs through the child’s natural development and early social interactions - From birth, children are observing and responding to social interactions around them - When children enter school, they begin learning more about relationships through observation and interaction Children’s Entry into Peer Groups - Study conducted by Pullatz and Gottman was designed to gain information on the behavior of “popular and unpopular” 2 nd and 3 rd grade school children when interacting with other children - Language is a little harsh – this is an older study. - Total of 60 children studied, 20 dyads were formed (10 “popular” pairs and 10 “unpopular” pairs) - Study: dyads would play a word game and a third child would be introduced. The children in the dyad did not know the third child was being brought in. the third child was told the rules of the game, but not told they needed to try to play when they went into the room - Bids for entry codes: o Information bid – gives simple information o Me bid - refers to themselves o Demand bid – statement that demands a response o Agreement bid – expresses agreement with group member o Feelings bid – expresses feelings/opinion/wants o Disagreement bid – d - Group response codes: o Accept o Reject o Ignore
