Report
Week 8 – Live instructor session Amy Bateman, Dec 3 rd , 2023. Due to travel, I could not attend the live instructor session for this week. My paper will be based on the information provided in the recorded video provided by Dr. Dunlop. At the beginning of the session, Dr. Dunlop spoke about brain function and delays in sensory processing. The course is explicitly based on implementing interventions, but I enjoyed the quick lesson on the brain itself. Discussing CBT, it was mentioned that negative schemas develop during childhood. If a client and counsellor can determine patterns, CBT can be an effective treatment strategy in adulthood because the brain can alter how it thinks. I also noted CBT is based on the perception of an event rather than the event itself. Individuals often believe negatively and make assumptions based on how they feel about a situation, not the situation itself. An example Dr. Dunlop mentioned was another vehicle cutting you off while driving. The driver’s perception can vary depending on the person. An individual may get angry and have a negative perception, or a person may understand there’s a specific reason the driver cut them off, like being in an emergency setting. SFBT is an intervention that has similarities to narrative therapy. It is strength-based and focuses on the salutation. It works well within a variety of cultural populations. I think I prefer to use this form of intervention compared to CBT. Something crucial for me to remember if I am using this intervention is to use the miracle question with an individual who has experienced trauma. I like the freedom of SFBT. The conversation can go in any direction, and this can help with any issue the client is experiencing.
