FRHD 3400: Reflection Week 3 I really enjoyed this week’s seminar, where in small groups, we engaged in role-playing behaviors, taking turns being both the therapist and the client. After completing this exercise, we discussed what contributions were effective. We discussed the importance of building a therapeutic relationship and making the client feel comfortable. For example, when I portrayed the therapist, I first asked my client: “How does it feel for you to be here today? Do you feel at ease, or do you feel any discomfort or apprehension?” By asking this, I tried to put my client at ease, letting them know that taking the step to come to therapy is something they should be proud of and that it was an excellent first step in healing. In the seminar, we also highlighted the importance of creating a warm environment for the client. We watched a short film, dramatizing how therapy is sometimes portrayed by the media. In this instance, the therapist was thoroughly disorganized, with the room in complete disarray, and a series of distracting phone calls that frequently interrupted the session. Even while some of these perceptions continue to stigmatise therapy in society, I firmly believe that this unfavourable impression is gradually changing. For example, the textbook explained the most common demographic for clients is relatively young (Reiter, 2022). This demonstrates that media perceptions affecting society must be enhanced, granting younger individuals to feel at ease about attending therapy. Finally, we highlighted the importance of never making the client feel judged due to a problem they are experiencing. This is very important because the client may already feel a measure of discomfort in attending therapy, so the therapist needs to facilitate a climate of trust, acceptance, and emotional safety.
While we did not have class this week, we were able to read various chapters and texts that highlighted additional skills that constitute effective therapy. For example, an article relating to therapy experiences for members of the QTBIPOC community highlighted the importance of therapists developing “micro-skills”, namely, empathy, and active listening skills when speaking with a client. Even if a therapist is not an expert in the client’s problem, empathy was noted as a trait that helped clients feel affirmed in their experiences, and truly heard as a valuable and respectable person (Arora et al., 2022). Additionally, the textbook highlighted additional characteristics of effective therapists, including adaptability and patience (Reiter, 2022). Adaptability is essential for a therapist to tailor various strategies and theories to each specific client. Rather than a “one size fits all” approach, therapists need to adapt to their clients to provide them with the best aid possible. Therapists developing patience is also highly important, as therapists may feel frustration that their client is not adhering to change as quickly as they would like. This frustration may become evident to the client, which may, in turn, damage the therapeutic alliance (Reiter, 2022).
