PSY 211 Project One Template Use this template to complete your case study analysis. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Kelly’s development. Piaget’s research in cognitive development is defined as a progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental experience. Children construct an understanding of the world around them, then experience discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment. (Mcleod, 2023) In Kelly’s case she has been raised in an unhealthy environment in which she has endured psychological neglect, this has caused her to be emotionally unstable and to lash out at others. Kelly has shown signs that her environmental experiences have slowed her maturation and caused her to seek the approval of others in an unhealthy way. In the scenario it says that she seeks reassurance from her peers by inquiring as to whether they will give her a second chance, if they deny her this second chance she feels rejected and abandoned. This suggests that Kelly is insecure and needs to be reassured that she is doing something right. 2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Kelly’s development. Vygotsky’s research on the zone of proximal development says that the Zone of Proximal Development as the area where the most sensitive instruction or guidance should be given – allowing the child to develop skills they will then use on their own – developing higher mental functions. (Mcleod, 2023) In the scenario Kelly’s mom states that she “unknowingly internalized and passed on her psychosocially dysfunctional qualities she learned from watching her parents, to her daughter Kelly. If Kelly’s zone of proximal development was unhealthy it could explain why she has the insecurities, and emotional outbursts. It could also explain why she has trouble keeping relationships with her peers, due to her neglectful upbringing Kelly does not know how to control her emotions and in turn pushes people away by acting out in an unhealthy way. 3. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. It does not actually say in the scenario that Kelly’s mother drank during pregnancy but if she had Kelly could suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This could explain why at her age she was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD), difficulty in school and her emotional outbursts. Judi also drank in an excessive manner when Kelly was younger causing her to be neglectful impacting Kelly’s development. Kelly now struggles with anxiety and depression due to her mother’s inattention to good health practices. 4. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. 1
Kelly’s cognitive well-being has been greatly influenced by her environmental experiences. Kelly’s older sibling died due to their substance abuse and her mother is an excessive drinker. These have impacted Kelly in unhealthy ways such as her inability to control her emotional outbursts and her tendency to retreat and isolate herself in social situations. Had she been raised in a healthier environment where she felt safe and able to express herself in a healthy manner Kelly may not have suffered from the anxiety, depression, and emotional outbursts. 5. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages of development. Kelly’s mother’s excessive drinking and inability to be there physically and emotionally have influenced her psychosocial well-being. As Judi has mentioned in the scenario, she believes that she has unintentionally passed on her own psychosocially dysfunctional traits to her daughter. Which has caused Kelly to struggle with regulating her emotions and lashing out at others when she feels threatened. 6. Evaluate the sociocultural factors that could contribute to Kelly’s maladaptive behavior. Kelly’s lack of social connections, inaccessibility to adequate health care, and dysfunctional family unit could have contributed to her maladaptive behavior. Had her mother been raised in a functional family where she received proper care and emotional support, she could have been better prepared to do the same for Kelly. Instead, Kelly was raised in essentially the same environment as her mother and now suffers from some of the same disorders as she does such as depression, anxiety, and the inability to regulate her emotions, thus becoming a product of her environment and repeating the cycle. 7. Explain why it is important to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination (versus separately) throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s well- being. Our overall well-being depends on a multitude of factors such as physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors. If we consider them as a whole, rather than one or two, we will gain a better understanding of an individual. To evaluate an individual based on one or two of these factors would not give us as detailed of an evaluation as we would get by considering them in combination. 8. Describe the research or theory that best explains Kelly’s behavior. Explain your response. Bandura’s social learning theory states that most behaviors 2
