PSY 211 Module Eight Activity Template In the Module Eight Activity Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview, Scenario, and Prompt sections. Then answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 2 to 5 sentences. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Applying Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is perspective-taking so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o perspective-taking is so critical to my conversation with Jasmine because it is important for me to see things from more then just my own perspective. By seeing things through Jasmine’s eyes, I can better understand her situation and help her to figure out the best solution for it. o How might you seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view inspire her to advocate for herself? o Seeing Jasmine’s situation from her point of view might inspire her to advocate for herself because she will see that she has support from someone outside of the situation. Having people that understand what you are going through on some level is very impowering, so with Jasmine she would know that there is someone to empathize with her and help her to know how to take action toward the issue. Applying Goleman’s concept of empathy in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is empathy so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o Empathy is so critical to my conversation with Jasmine because empathy allows me to better understand what she is going through. Being able to empathies with Jasmine I can see the situation through her eyes and see what my emotions would be like in the same kind of situation. o In Jasmine’s case, what do you believe is the main difference between perspective- taking and empathy? o In Jasmine’s case, I believe the main difference between perspective-taking and empathy is empathy is stepping out of my own emotions and understand her emotions on a deeper level. Perspective-taking on the other hand is more putting myself into her shoe, figuratively speaking, to try and better understand her. There is not really any emotion involved in perspective-taking whereas empathy is all emotions. Applying Gilligan’s views on morality in ways that would support Jasmine, address the following in your response: o Why is moral reasoning so critical to your conversation with Jasmine? o Moral reasoning is so critical to my conversation with Jasmine Because moral reasoning is grounded in principles of morality which is used to resolve situations. In the case of 1
mine and jasmine’s conversation it can help me to figure out the right solution for her situation. o According to Gilligan, which type of morality best aligns with Jasmine’s situation: care- based morality, justice-based morality, or both? Explain your response. o The type of morality that best aligns with Jasmine’s situation is justice-based morality. This is because we should all want to fight for equality for every human no matter what their genetic makeup is. This topic is something that has been a hot button topic for a long time and is something that we should all want to change and make equal for everyone. As you wrap up your conversation with Jasmine, integrate the perspectives of Piaget, Goleman, and Gilligan by answering the following questions: o According to Piaget, what is one factor that could inhibit your ability to take Jasmine’s perspective? How might Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigate this factor? o According to Piaget, one factor that could inhibit my ability to take Jasmine’s perspective is if I had never personal experienced unfair pay in any of my past jobs. It could be very difficult to put myself in her shoes if I have no previous knowledge of this situation. Goleman’s concept of empathy mitigates this factor by helping me to align my emotions with her emotions so that I could understand what she is going through and how I can help her. o How does Goleman’s concept of empathy relate to Piaget’s concept of perspective- taking in your conversation with Jasmine? o Goleman’s concept of empathy relates to Piaget’s concept of perspective-taking in my conversation with Jasmine because they both require me to have a similar level of emotional intelligence and understanding. The outcome of both is the same it is the road takin to that outcome is where they differ. o How do Gilligan’s views on morality relate to Goleman’s concept of empathy in your conversation with Jasmine? o Gilligan’s views on morality relate to Goleman’s concept of empathy in my conversation with Jasmine because empathy and morality go together. Empathy lets me connect with her on a more emotional level whereas morality lets me connect with her on my own personal morals as a woman. 2
