Nature vs Nurture Discussion In understanding how nature (biological bases and genetic inheritance) and nurture (environment, learning, experiences) interact to shape behaviours or abilities. We need to consider the example of intellectual and emotional regulation in individuals and how genetic predispositions and environmental factors influence these. The nurture perspective emphasizes that ecological factors, including early childhood experiences, education, and social interactions, significantly shape intelligence and developmental outcomes. It focuses on the critical role of a stimulating and enriching information environment in enhancing cognitive abilities, problem- solving skills, emotional intelligence, and overall intellectual growth. Early childhood nurturing, quality education, access to resources, and exposure to diverse learning opportunities stimulate cognitive development and individuals' capacity to learn and thrive. Understanding environmental factors impact on intelligence and development can create policies and ideas that nurture individuals and empower them to reach their intellectual and developmental potential. "Intelligence is the ability to use one's mind to solve novel problems and learn from experience (Schacter, D.L. et al.,2023 p.370)." Intelligence is a complex trait influenced by genetic and environmental factors. "For instance, one study compared siblings who had significantly different IQs (Schacter, D.L. et al.,2023 p.372)." This shows that although we generally believe intelligence is solely based on genetic influence, even those with the same genes have different abilities and other factors. Environmental factors, or nurture, such as access to quality education, stimulating and enriching environments, and early childhood experiences, play a crucial role in developing and enhancing cognitive abilities. Quality
education, exposure to diverse learning opportunities, and supportive social environments can help individuals maximize their genetic intelligence potential. Growing up, I always had an infinity to learn. I loved to read and enjoyed school. However, due to having several learning disabilities, including dyslexia, ADD, and OCD, I was never given the opportunities to excel or put my passion for learning to the test. When I was in public school, they did not have the support or knowledge to teach children like me. My parents eventually moved me to a private school where I would have one-on-one sessions with my teachers, peer tutors, and extra help provided through the school. Without private school, I genuinely believe I would not have reached my level of success in postsecondary. The second pillar I chose to focus on is development. Upbringing, early experiences, social support, and emotional education significantly influence an individual's emotional regulation skills. Learning healthy coping mechanisms and dynamic regulation strategies through experiences and education can enhance one's ability to manage and express emotions effectively and maturely. At the age of eight, I lost my mother to cancer. Losing a parent at a young age can significantly influence one's developmental nurture. The absence of a crucial parental figure can lead to a complex interplay of emotional, cognitive, and social adjustments. As I was so young when she passed, I did not understand the emotional effect it would have on me in later years. The void left by a parent accelerated my emotional maturity, forcing me to tackle complex emotions and situations earlier than others my age. On a cognitive level, I also had to develop faster as there were new family dynamics. I had to be more adaptable and independent to accommodate the lack of numbers in our family. However, I was able to have accelerated development in other areas socially. I didn't know then, but I grew a secure
