PSY 328 Module Six Journal Template First, read Chapter 13 of your text. Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Explain to what extent you value flexibility in yourself. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. I value flexibility in myself much more now at twenty-nine than I did even in my early twenties. Being psychologically flexible has made my daily life more manageable as well as kept my anxiety more at bay. I believe that I have a wide degree of flexibility and am continuing to broaden that threshold still. Describe your most common responses to stressors . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. My most common response to stressors would be approaching, dealing with the internal and external causes of the stressor and being proactive in finding a way to alleviate it. (Shiraev, E., 2016 pg. 408) I start by taking inventory of my own feelings and perspectives and then going over the possible solutions to my stressor. If there is no solution I can come up with myself, I usually talk with my therapist first and bounce ideas off of her to see if we can both agree on the healthiest course of action. Based on the results of your Big Five Personality Test and your own personal reflection, on a scale of low, mixed, or high, describe how you would rate your stress tolerance using the traits of hardiness, optimism, and dispositional optimism. Your response should be about 4 to 6 sentences in length. It hasn’t always been this way, but my stress tolerance is generally quite high. I have lived a very eventful life already before the age of thirty, which has allowed me to be able to withstand much more emotional hardship than others my age. We can equate that to a high scale of hardiness. My optimism is on a mixed scale, simply because I know that everything can’t go perfectly all the time. However, my dispositional optimism remains on a higher scale. Although life can give us unfavorable circumstances, I can choose to move forward and find peace in a situation eventually. Looking at life with a “glass half full” mentality instead of the alternative has genuinely made me a happier person than when I was thinking with a negative perception of life. Describe how you struggle with traits that negatively affect the coping process. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. The traits I struggled with that negatively affected my coping process do not bother me as much as they used to. Since my late teens I have battled with ongoing depression and anxiety, accompanied by manic episodes and dispositional pessimism. My brain would trick me into believing that everything was bad, and the world was against me, which would send me into destructive behaviors since “nothing mattered”. In the last few years, I have sought treatment for my anxiety and depression and no long am controlled by those negative thoughts. Describe the strategies you use when you find yourself experiencing cognitive distortions . Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. 1
I like to use a mix of problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies when experiencing cognitive distortions. (Shiraev, E., 2016 pg. 415) Finding ways to decompress starts by taking deep breaths and regulating my emotions. I don’t like to go into any situation with spiked emotions because I know I’m not acting logically if I’m acting out of emotion first. After I feel more level-headed, I analyze my situation logically and typically talk it out with someone I trust. Finding even a temporary solution to whatever the issue at hand is can bide time for a more permanent solution to come forward. Describe the applications of adjustment and coping you see in your experiences in the workplace, at school, or in your relationships with others. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences in length. I’ve witnessed adjustment and coping in my fiancé in the last six months after losing one of his closest friends to addiction. After the shock of the initial loss, he didn’t feel as though he “had time” to morn and cope with the loss because he was still working and being a pillar of support for his friends and the family mourning their son. He worked through the emotional turmoil and adjusted to putting up a front when he wasn’t home. Coping has come in a variety of ways, such as little reminders of his friend in daily life that make my partner smile and remember the love he has for his friend. References Shiraev, E. (2016).
