Erikson’s Theory Sabrina Savage Lifespan Development Chamberlain University November 5, 2023
Erikson’s Theory Unbeknownst to us, every interaction affects us on a greater scale from infancy to death. Our personalities, emotional intelligence, and outlook are ever changing. But who we initially are at the core does stem from somewhere. Erikson’s theory states there are 8 stages of development, those stages begin as soon as we are born, influenced by our caregivers, where we will learn trust and distrust. “Adult attributes and developmental accomplishments were captured as if they existed on a continuum of childhood” (Hoare, 2001) Some if not the most crucial moments some would argue, are from newborn to 18 months. We learn basic trust and if this trust turns out to be reliable as well as predictable, we will be more confident and have an understanding of safety in the world. On the flip side of trust, we have distrust, where we may encounter children who have a lack of authority or trust in parents and caregivers. This could be due to them not receiving reliable care. Autonomy versus Shame and Doubt us the next stage, where we will begin to have the power of choice. Ranging from 18 months to 3 years, the adults in our lives should be allowing us to make simple decisions which will lead to a sense of independence and a decent self esteem. Caregivers not allowing the child to make choices can cause the child to feel helpless, frustrated, and lack the ability to make decisions for themselves. In stage three we are dealing with initiatives and guilt. We are growing into ourselves at this point in childhood, in preschool we learn to play with others and the roles we will take on in these games. Having the ability to express one’s desires to be in a particular role can create a sense of belonging, and initiative to pursue goals. While a child having to damper down their own desires can be made to feel guilt for being their true authentic selves. This is where some would suggest that leaders and followers are created. As we follow along with Erikson’s theory, we now are following a pattern of how our development is impacted by environmental, societal and economic conditions. Jumping to stage six, this is where I feel I relate the most too. Intimacy versus Isolation, age range from 18 to 40. This is the section of our lives that we begin looking for intimacy and partners, and as life would have it, we will encounter certain situations and conflicts that will later dictate how and who we are in these relationships. Due to major conflict at the age of 18, I’ve had to relearn who I am, and how to be with others to make and create long lasting relationships. Every interaction counts, we use these to develop who we are in the next moment and stage of our lives. References Cummings-Clay, D. (n.d.). Child development .
