Hello everyone! My name is Megan, and I am currently perusing a bachelor’s in Psychology with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Psychology. This will be my second bachelor’s degree! I have my first one in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Arizona State University. After I complete my second bachelor’s I will be perusing my Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Baylor to become a Speech Pathologist for elementary aged kids. One direct way children impact their own acculturation is through peer interaction. Through peer interaction children can learn the differences and similarities between the different cultures they encounter. The culture and values children are brought up in are reflected in their play so when children from different cultures play together, they will naturally learn about the cultures of their peers by interacting in imaginative play. One indirect way children impact their own acculturation is through observational learning. “The family is the primary context in which the child grows, develops an identity, is socialized, is hurt and healed, and struggles with powerful developmental issues” (Rothe et al., 2010). As children grow up, they subconsciously observe and take on the attitudes towards other cultures that they observed from their families. The concept of being active in your own development relates to many of the programmatic themes including self-care, emotional intelligence, and ethics. Self-care involves taking time to reflect on yourself and develop skills to improve your own well-being. When we are more active in our development, we can learn how to better improve our well-being through different activities like healthy eating, being active, and consciously making choices to improve our happiness through our relationships with those around us. Emotional intelligence is a crucial skill when it comes to forming, building, and maintaining relationships in our lives. It allows us to understand and empathize with the emotions of other people. To be able to empathize with others we must actively work on understanding these emotions in ourselves by actively working through theses emotions daily. Finally, being active in our development relates to the programmatic theme of ethics because every person lives by a code of ethics. Being active in our development helps us to build our own code of ethics by learning how to act with integrity, treat others the way we want to be treated and learning kindness for those around us.
