Hi Stephanie, I like your suggestion of incorporating the concept of "flow" with Colleen. To dive into your question, I think narrative therapy techniques can help Colleen reframe her narrative, which would help her envision a more fulfilling and hopeful future. One of the techniques within narrative therapy that could be used is 'externalizing the problem.' This would involve helping Colleen externalize her perceived problem (her belief that she is not intelligent and that because of this her future is limited and hopeless). After externalizing this belief, I would encourage her to give the problem a name such as "self-doubt", which would help her see the problem as separate from her identity (Payne, 2013). Another narrative therapy technique that may be beneficial is to identify exceptions. With this, i would have Colleen reflect and think about exceptions to her negative self-beliefs, such as times in her life when she felt proud of herself, accomplished, or even hopeful (Payne, 2013). I think highlighting these exceptions would help her challenge her negative thoughts and perceptions of herself. References Payne, M. (2013). Narrative therapy. The Handbook of Individual Therapy, 469.
