1. Briefly summarize the results of the Theories Sorter you took in weeks one and five while also noting areas that changed and remained the same. 2. What is your reaction to your results (why do you think your results changed or stayed the same, do you agree with your results, and why/why not)? 3. Would you like to use a single or more than one theory in your preferred future work setting, and why? 4. In your opinion, would you instead be counseled by someone that follows a single approach or more than one approach, and why?
I took the first quiz in week one, where I was only aware of the given approaches. I didn’t have much concrete knowledge. I remember reading the question in November, thinking it promptly made sense, but I could not provide more insight into why it made sense. After taking the class and learning more about the approaches, I see why they made sense and could even agree with more of the statements. The second time I took the test, I scored the highest in psychoanalysis, with 120, but the first time it was 91.7. The lowest I scored was SFBT at 60, which went to 70 the second time. The second time around, I knew what theory it was by the questions, which made me agree with more statements. The case studies allowed me to apply these approaches, strengthening my understanding. Psychodynamics scored the highest during the first and second times I took the test. It was the highest because it is the approach most used in undergrad, so I was more familiar with this approach. However, I had the least experience with any of the postmodern approaches before the class, which caused it to have the highest increase, 17.8%. The concepts that had the most significant increase were psychoanalysis, RCT, and gestalt. Psychoanalysis was already one of my highest levels; the course only gave me more information that I could use. I had no previous knowledge of RCT and only surface-level knowledge of gestalt. I had a 3% decrease in existential; that was because I understood the concept more, so I could give it a more personable score. When I am practicing, I will utilize one or two approaches in the beginning until I have refined them. But it is better to be able to use multiple approaches. But it is better to be well- rounded and utilize more approaches. Individual psychology states that each person is unique with innate abilities and personal characteristics (Neukrug, 2018), so many approaches can give the therapist more options in treatment. A client may benefit from the thought-stopping technique in CBT, but they may also be influenced by narrative therapy. If I were to go to counseling, I would prefer my counselor to be able to use multiple approaches. Using one approach may make the sessions feel rigid and only address some of my issues. A counselor adept at multiple approaches has more bags to pull from. Experience is also a factor. A counselor who can draw from different areas has more experience. Using various approaches effectively takes time to master, which comes with time and working with multiple clients. Reference: Neukrug, E. (2018). Counseling theory and practice (2nd ed.).
