2 The Reasons for Early Christian Persecution In the video "Dr. Francis Schaeffer: How Should We Then Live? Episode 1 of 10," we witness how Christians were marginalized and persecuted in ancient Roman culture. Some examples of this can be seen in the video. One example is the persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero. Nero blamed the Christians for the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, leading to widespread suspicion and hatred towards them. Christians were falsely accused, arrested, and subjected to brutal torture and executions, including being burned alive or used as living torches in Nero's garden parties. This demonstrates how Christians were marginalized and targeted by the Roman government. Another example highlighted in the video is the refusal of Christians to participate in idol worship and sacrifice to the Roman gods. This non-conformity to the dominant religious practices of the time made Christians stand out and be viewed as a threat to the stability and cohesion of the Roman society. As a result, they faced social ostracism, discrimination, and even violence. Moving on to present times, we can observe similar instances of marginalization and persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in America and around the world. One example is the discrimination faced by Christian business owners who refuse to provide services that go against their religious beliefs, such as baking cakes for same-sex weddings. In some cases, these business owners have faced legal battles and financial ruin for standing by their convictions. In various parts of the world, Christians are also targeted for their faith.
