Attention Extinction Treasure M. Jefferson Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Capella University PSY 7710: Ethics for Behavior Analysts Dr. Meredith Mates August 12, 2023
2 Attention Extinction My supervisor always says, “When conducting extinction, you ignore the behavior, not the child.” Cooper defines extinction as “ a behavior change tactic that occurs when reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior is discontinued, which results in the occurrence of the behavior decreasing in the future (Cooper et al., 2020).” There are two types of extinction: escape and attention. Attention extinction can be defined as,” withholding attention to a behavior that was previously reinforced (Iwata et al., 1994). The major topic of my paper will be attention extinction and why it can and cannot be a successful evidence-based controversial therapy. Pros to Attention Extinction When executing programs such as tantrums, property destruction, sobbing, and aggressive behaviors, using attention extinction is beneficial. Fisher et al. (2004) explore how noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) aids attention extinction. Because you are praising them for doing anything other than the intended attention, providing alternative resources will assist minimize these behaviors while working on attention extinction. For example, instead of giving a child candy if they had a tantrum in the middle of the store, you could now offer them candy if they helped with the shopping for five minutes without having a tantrum. on. Two publications demonstrate how functional communication training (FCT) is an effective intervention treatment for attention extinction and lowering self-injurious and destructive behavior (Hanley et al., 2005; O'Reilly et al., 2007). Combining these interventions with attention extinction has proven that they had a good effect on lowering the behaviors that these scientists sought to work on.
3 Cons to Attention Extinction While there are effective interventions that show how attention extinction can be beneficial, there are also concerns on how aversive attention extinction can be. Letman et al discusses how in some cases where they were maintaining self-injurious behavior (SIB) through extinction intervention which increased their aggresion in half of the case studies. Another blog, wrote how they compared attention extinction to emotional abuse (Watkins, 2023). They discuss how when therapist implement planned ignoring or attention extinctions as interventions that they could create aversive reactions for individuals who are already evoking undesired behaviors. Evaluation of Ethics While I do have experience with implementing extinction as an intervention, I also know that I am a long way from understanding how to effectively implement the treatment (which will be indivudalized case by case), which is why I will ulitize code 1.05 practicing with a scope of competence and code 1.06 maintaining competence. Both codes ensure that I am conducting these interventions that I am up to date with current interventions that will be relevant with attention extinction. I would also use code 2.10 which is collaborating with others to ensure that if I am unable to implement the treatment that I also have qualified colleagues to assist me and help me out. One final thing I want to use when evaluation my ethics is using code 2.15 which is minimizing the risk of behavior change interventions. That way I am making sure that my clients will not experience any harm on their treatments and if that seems to arise then making sure that I am modifying their treatment to fit their needs (BACB. 2020).
