Reflective Summary Assignment I have learned a variety of valuable information throughout my time in this course. I have learned about what goes into making sure my classroom is a place that is developmentally appropriate for my students. Throughout my assignments, I have learned what my theoretical beliefs are and why they are important. It has allowed me to see what I value as a teacher in my classroom and the impact that I strive to have on my students. I learned through the classroom design project how important the layout of my classroom is for intentional learning. I based the layout of my classroom on my five beliefs which are the importance of play, developing cultural competence, advocating for students, intentional and purposeful planning, and inclusion. Paying attention to where areas are located in my classroom play a huge role in developing a safe environment for my students, as well as, enhancing their learning experience. I chose to focus on what I would want my preschool classroom to look like if I were able to decide. I currently work in a preschool classroom at an elementary school and tried to base it off how my room is set up now. I adjusted a couple areas for the functionality of the classroom. The layout of my classroom and what I thought was important. “In planning the learning experiences, the intentional teacher thinks carefully about what will foster children’s enthusiasm for learning and enable them to reach important goals in all areas of their development and learning” (Bredekamp, 2019, p. 81). I really enjoyed interacting with my fellow classmates each week during our discussion posts. This allowed me to see what others in my field are doing and their different views on curriculum and teaching. It also gave me an opportunity to take some of their suggestions and implement them into my classroom. The project planning assignment taught me how to plan a detailed lesson for my classroom. This was a great way to practice making an in-depth lesson plan that is
developmentally appropriate for the students in my class. I do this quite often for my job now, but it was nice to have a different perspective of it for this course. As teachers, it is important to make sure the lessons we are planning go beyond what an activity can teach. It involves teaching the theme or topic in every area of the classroom. This allows the students a variety of way they can learn and how that theme or topic can be related to everyday life. Through doing this assignment, I realized how important it is for students to see what they have learned and have opportunities to talk to their peers and families about it. “ The teacher’s role is to support children through their inquiry. Teachers help children become responsible for their work, guide them to document and report their findings, and provide opportunities for choice” (Alfonso, 2017). Another thing I learned while taking this course is the importance of assessment and how it can be done in a multitude of ways. I knew the basics about assessment before taking this course, but I was able to learn more about why it is so important. It can really pay a huge role when planning activities for some of my students. Knowing what they need in order to learn best or what they already know is a great way to build on their knowledge. “Teachers should understand that developmentally appropriate practice requires him or her to know where any particular child is in the learning cycle, which children may need extra support, and to document the learning that is taking place” (Kostelnik et al., 2013, p. 59).
