Refer to Chapter 8 of Groups: Process and Practice and share how the use of role-plays among group members could affect the stages of group development. (Share an example using at least one stage of group development.) What purpose could role-play serve for individual members and for the group as a whole? At its core roleplaying in therapy is a form of behavior therapy designed to replace maladaptive responses with new, more healthy ones (Role-Playing – An Overview / ScienceDirect Topics, n.d.). In group therapy, roleplaying can be more difficult to use but can be a useful tool when used correctly. Not all groups come together smoothly, and it can sometimes be difficult for a group leader to encourage cooperation between their group members. During the transition between the forming and storming stages of group formation conflict between group members can be at its highest. By using roleplaying, the group leader can demonstrate proper communication techniques between group members that they can use to defuse tense situations between members. Some clients were never properly modeled on how to be respectful when they communicate with other people. Because of this they may not understand how they can communicate in healthy and respectful ways with other group members. By using roleplaying between themselves and other group members the group leader can demonstrate the respectful way to communicate what the clients want to say so that it does not trigger the other group members. In addition, the group leader can use roleplaying to demonstrate how a person can respond when triggered without escalating the situation.
