Jami McCalla EDU-354 July 29, 2023 Biological and Physical Development Scenarios Scenario #2 (First grade) Charlie is having trouble connecting with his peers, verbalizing, and was subsequently diagnosed with Autism. PET scans and SCAT scans are the best way to test for Autism, along with various screening test. The test demonstrate that the majority of autistic patients showed lower levels in the hippocampus and amygdala, along with by mesial temporal lobe and cerebellum, with high levels in frontal lobes. “It has been documented that early initiation of treatment in children with ASD leads to significant improvement in language, cognition, and behavior functioning.” (APA, 1994) Counseling, and life skills training will be helpful for Charlie. This will help him with social skills, and help provide training for his parents, who will be an essential support system. Routine is very important, and the school can provide a paraprofessional for Charlie, to assist him in his classroom so he is successful. The paraprofessional is trained to help set schedules, and help Charlie learn to transition from activies, this will help at home as well. It will also help him learn to communicate, with charts or an ipad. This will make life for his family a little easier because they will have the training to help understand Charlie’s needs, and him to understand theirs. It will also help in school. Children with Autism are frequently overstimulated, so understanding Charlie’s limits will help at both home and school. Counseling will be helpful for his parents, and provide support, as dealing with an Autistic child is stressful, and often overwhelming. Community will be important for everyone involved. Charlie will likely need assistance his entire life, so the community will be able to help his family prepare and cope while making a plan for his future. Scenario #4 (Fourth grade) Marc was born premature, and at a low birth weight, studies show that “moderately low birth weight children were significantly more likely than normal birth weight children to be identified as having a special health care need, having a chronic condition, having a learning disability, and having attention- deficit disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. “The fact that Marc was low birthweight is definitely associated with his learning delays, and adhd. Several studies have reported that children with a low or extremely low birth weight are as much as 3.8 times more likely to meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD ”. (Stein et al., 2006). Neuropsychological functions play a large part and are affected by the low- birth-weight babies, and the diagnosis of adhd and other developmental delays. Not all babies who are low birth weight are premature, but many are, and the delays are also related to premature babies. The fact that Marc’s parents are not involved in his life, and he is raised mostly by his grandmother also will influence his behavior as well. With absent parents, that has a effect on a child psychologically. The arrangements where children are raised by grandparents are often unofficial, so they do not qualify for social services, and that leads to not all the needs being met. This will leave a child feeling uncertain, and often lead to behavior problems in the classroom. Marc will be seeking stability, and that can be provided for him in his school life, with routines and positive reinforcement. Counseling can also be provided to help Marc deal with his feelings and help provide him with coping skills for his emotions and his adhd. With help from the school, Marc can find his school a safe space to help him cope. The school can also provide outside sources to help the grandmother, so that she can help Marc. They can provide counseling, assistance with food, and medical assistance, so that she is not so alone as it is a hard situation for her as well. All the resources will help Marc, the school, and his grandmother to provide a better quality of life and community.
