2 Resource Guide for Trauma and Narrative Therapy When looking at couples, it is essential to remember that the relationship experience can be very different for those who have experienced trauma. In its many forms, trauma can be expressed in a vast number of ways and have the possibility of negatively affecting a relationship. Zimmerman et al. (2021) suggest that it can be challenging for clients to address and rethink past trauma because of the magnitude of lived tragedies and limited recollections of a positive nature during traumatic events. Johnson et al. (2019) explain that even though maltreatment can have a detrimental impact on intimate relationships, these same relationships have been shown to have a substantial positive effect on the long-term trauma outcomes. This Resource Guide is intended to be a helpful tool for therapists working with couples with a trauma history. According to Johnson et al. (2019) , the negative consequences of childhood sexual abuse can last into adulthood and impact a number of areas in daily life for that adult and can be expressed as follows: Difficulty maintaining relationships Fear they will be seen as frail Enter relationships where they may be taken advantage of Experience humiliation and take responsibility for unwanted sexual advances Feelings of worthlessness Morgan et al. (2018) explain that for people who have been tormented, some of the ways trauma can be expressed are as follows: Culpability for themselves and another
3 Puzzlement and irritation with their partner Extreme sadness Illicit drug use of the affected or their family An inability to set limitations Doncaster et al. (2019) suggest that for those who have significant others that have lived through or fought in times of war, the following may be observed: Extreme nervousness Secondary emotional stress Problems with libations Caregiver burnout Mental health diagnosis The Narrative Model The above highlight some of the harmful effects associated with a traumatic event. Glass (2019) suggests narrative therapy is derived from Foucault's thoughts and how they could work with systemic modes of change. Glass (2019) states narrative therapy considers that people learn about things, themselves, and language through their environment; they interact with and get from others. Glass (2019) further suggests that with narrative therapy people can use their internal resources to develop a new way to see things; by use of past and current resources the family has used or can use to manage difficult moments to improve the family unit.
