Lesson 2 Assignment By Angela Christensen Wellness of the Young Child Define the concept of healthy development in various domains and their impact on brain development among infants, preschoolers, and school-aged children. Physical Development is the development of senses that include gross and fine motor skills such as grasping, pinching, swinging arms, and leg kicks. Children growing in size and strength can depend on them getting a balanced nutritional diet. Children who are more physically active have better academic performance, stay focused, and pay better attention. Children also have better recall and short-term memory. Cognitive Development is a child’s ability to process thoughts, make, implement, and accomplish plans, as well as understand their surroundings, and express creativity. Infants learn basic actions like sucking, looking, and listening to learn about the world around them. Preschoolers learn to think symbolically and enjoy pretend play. Children in this age may still struggle with logic and understanding of another person’s perspective. School- aged children think more logically but may still struggle with hypothetical situations and abstract thinking. Children can start to learn empathy at this age. Social and emotional development is when a child starts to develop understanding and control over their emotions. Children can start to identify with how others feel, develop the ability to cooperate, show empathy, develop attachments to others, and use moral reasoning. All of these skills continue to develop as children develop mentally and physically. (Fraser- Thill, 2021) Children who have a properly balanced nutritional diet are known to have an
increase in the production of new neurons that can affect the synaptic plasticity of the brain helping brain growth and development. How do social and emotional experiences early in life affect brain development and learning? In children’s first years of life, they start to develop their social and emotional skills such as how to share with others, follow instructions, and regulate their emotions. These skills will lay the foundation that helps children develop their literacy, numeracy, and other cognitive abilities that are critical for success throughout school and life. How does play and movement affect brain development and learning? When young children play, they learn to explore their environment and make sense of different and new information that they see and hear. During this time, children will strengthen and expand networks of connections in their developing brains. As children grow older, their brains form many more connections than the brain will ever need. What relationship between stress or abuse and brain development or learning? “Extensive research on the biology of stress shows that healthy development can be derailed by excessive or prolonged activation of stress response systems in the body and brain. Stress can have damaging effects on learning, behavior, and health throughout a child’s lifespan” ( Toxic Stress , 2020). What is the relationship between nutrition and brain development of learning?
