Wendy Lipps May 5, 2023 Discussion Board #1 PSYC 406 Professor Robinson Why groups add an important dimension to holistic treatment. The definition of Holistic is characterized by the belief that all parts of something are connected and can only be referenced to the whole. “The solution demands a holistic approach and a strategic vision of what can be achieved” When combined with medicine the term then is characterized by the treatment of the whole person or a group as a whole. Taking in the factors of mental and social accounts, not the symptoms of the illness. With the view that the body and soul are one unit, not two units. Holistic health looks at an individual’s treatment of their own emotions and their spirit, body, and mind. Group therapy shows an individual that they are not alone. As a group, you are sharing your experiences and opening up to one another other. This encourages each other to talk and find solutions as a group that will help each other heal. Individuals usually think that they are alone until the group opens the topic. The purpose of group therapy is to work as a whole and find solutions. The Bible encourages us to work as a group. Group therapy is good for the individual who is open-minded and can see their differences and similarities in the group setting, “In a group, it is easier for an individual to see their inner personal behaviors, and how to fix or heal from them.” (Leszcz, M.., Yalom, I., 2020). You must be receptive to what other group members have to say. “You must accept and give feedback to one another. Examine your inner personal behaviors and be willing to work on them” (Leszcz, M.., Yalom, I., 2020). “Holistic group treatment attempts to promote the acceptance of their illness. While enhancing coping and
memory skills, while maintaining positive emotions during the development of a positive lifestyle” (Cheng, Daphne, Kim-Wan, Kwok, Ng, Petrus, Timothy, Young, 2017). As Christians, we are told in scripture to confess our faults to one another and pray for healing. James tells us to “Confess your faults to each other, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. God intervenes in many ways from heartfelt prayers. (King James Bible, James 5:16). When reading Proverbs, scripture tells us to encourage one another. “Iron sharpens iron, as man holds his friend accountable”. (Proverbs 27:17). We are being told to hold each other accountable and pray for each other for healing. We are all sinners and as a whole group can help each other be better people. Seeing we are not alone in our sin and lifting each other up, not putting each other down. Encouraging each other to do better.
