Music can play a significant role when education young children, as it can motivate and engage many students in the classroom to foster learning. Music in my primary classroom serves many purposes from learning sounds of letters, music during independent work, transitioning, and a great unwind. Academically visual arts impact learning and cognition by associating it with, phonemic awareness and phonological association of letters in the alphabet. Learning sounds is a beginning to learning how to spell and eventually reading words. As a primary teacher visual arts is influential when learning new sounds as children are able to recall the sounds associated with the letter. Music comes in handy when I transition from activity to another, it serves as a countdown to when students need to be at a designated area. In the readings it state “Other studies have shown that listening to certain music stimulates the parts of the brain responsible for memory recall and visual imagery. Researchers have also found that listening to background music enhances the efficiency of those working with their hands ("How the Arts Develop the Young Brain") .” When we do a music song that correlates with the phonemic awareness the students tend to sing that song to themselves while they work independently or they look at the picture cards associated with the song to transfer learning to answer a question. Its always great to see that “aha” face once they can relocate the letter association. Within my classroom I utilize the visual arts as much as a I can with kids 4-5 years old. At this age you can engage with students through movement and actions. When we go from one activity to another I tend to place music or have students do certain movements like hopping, bark like a dog, etc… Reference: “How the Arts Develop the Young Brain.” AASA , https://www.aasa.org/SchoolAdministratorArticle.aspx?id=7378.
