Behavior and Attitudes Aryannah B. Desty School of Behavioral Sciences, Liberty University PSYC 312: Social Psychology Dr. Jamie Getz November 20, 2023
Introduction This Topic is about behavior and attitudes. Behavior and attitudes are two interconnected aspects of human psychology that play a crucial role in shaping individuals' actions and perceptions. Behavior refers to the observable actions and reactions exhibited by individuals in response to various stimuli, while attitudes encompass the beliefs, values, and opinions that influence these behaviors. (Myers & Twenge, 2022) Both behavior and attitudes are important because they play a crucial role in determining the outcomes of our relationships, personal growth, and overall well-being. According to Jones (2019), it can be argued that consciously acting in a certain way can lead to a change in our beliefs and attitudes towards that behavior. It is my belief that implicit bias can be modified. Research has demonstrated that through consistent practice, we can condition our minds to perceive certain actions as appropriate and desirable. The Role of Attitude Strength in Behavioral Spillover In this article, the authors explore the concept of "behavioral spillover", which refers to the tendency for engaging in one behavior to lead to changes in other related behaviors. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) This article supports my thesis statement by leading to behavior changes and that attitude matters in behavioral spillover. The study specifically focuses on the role of attitude strength in this process and whether attitudes act as a moderator or mediator of behavioral spillover.. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) Attitude strength plays a crucial role in behavioral spillover as well. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) However, it is important to note that attitude strength does not necessarily act as a moderator in this process. The strength of an individual's attitude towards a particular behavior can influence the likelihood of that behavior spilling over into other areas of
their life. This means that individuals with strong attitudes are more likely to exhibit consistent behaviors across different contexts. The purpose statement of this article focuses on the role of attitude strength in the process of behavior and whether attitudes act as a moderator or mediator of behavioral spillover. The method that was applied for data collection was a web-based survey tool where participants were asked series of questions related to their attitudes and various things. There738 participants in total with 548 in time 1 and 490 in time 2. The results showed that individuals with stronger attitudes were more likely to engage in spillover behaviors, but this effect was not dependent on the strength of the initial attitude. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) These findings suggest that attitude strength is an important factor in predicting behavioral spillover, but its role as a moderator is not as significant as previously though which relates to my thesis statement. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) Overall, the study highlights the importance of considering the strength of attitudes when examining behavioral spillover and suggests that interventions aimed at promoting behavior change should focus on strengthening attitudes towards the target behavior. (Brügger & Höchli, 2019) Affective Contagion: How Attitudes Expressed by Others Influence Our Perception of Actions The article explores the concept of affective contagion and its impact on our perception of actions. It delves into how attitudes expressed by others can influence our own attitudes and behaviors. The purpose of the article is to examine the phenomenon of affective contagion and its impact on our perception of actions. Through empirical research and analysis, the article aims to shed light on how attitudes expressed by others can influence our own attitudes and emotions,
