PSY 211 Project One Template Use this template to complete your case study analysis. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Kelly’s development. In Kelly’s case the trauma her mother/parents endured have been reflected onto how Kelly has developed and learned to cope with stress. According to Piaget’s research, how children develop is an understanding of the world through the biologic development and interaction with the environment they were raised in (McLeod, 2018). Kellys family life and negative situations she has been shown has taught her an inappropriate way of processing her emotions and behaviors. 2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Kelly’s development. In Kellys development, she has watched her mother deal with alcoholism and with the trauma of being emotionally abused in her childhood. She has also witnessed the results of her brother passing of substance abuse. This is all foundations for Vygotsky’s theory on social-cultural. This theory portrays human development as a process dependent on more developed members of society, meaning that a child would develop cultural values, beliefs and problem-solving strategies (McLeod, 2020). Which in result the lack of her mother managing her own coping skills and emotions has taught her daughter to mimic her mother's bad habits. 3. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. According to the simulation, Kellys mother was abusing alcohol and we have no idea but there is potential that she also used it during pregnancy which would have caused fetal alcohol syndrome. With the neglect that was also present in Kellys home, it's safe to say that the odds of failure to thrive as an infant and poor nutrition would have also been possible situations Kelly may have endured. This does not include the emotional neglect Kelly most likely suffered and would definitely result in unstable relationships later in life, trust issues and the need for perfection to satisfy others' expectations. 4. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. With the lack of care Kelly received, attentive relationships to help a child learn basic self-care skills were probably null. It's also safe to say Kelly would not have parents willing to read stories and develop language skills so she would most likely be behind her peers when starting Kindergarten. If Kelly had been with a family as attentive as Aprils, she could have been just as successful as her. 5. Identify factors that could have influenced Kelly’s psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages of development. Kelly's psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages of development was most likely caused by unhealthy stress from her family, family
dysfunction, and a lack of positive social experiences. These issues alone can cause trouble in emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. 6. Evaluate the sociocultural factors that could contribute to Kelly’s maladaptive behavior. In Kellys situation maladaptive behaviors typically come from two types; goal directed and habitual. In goal directed Kelly used coping mechanisms like anger outburst, damaging behavior and aggressive behaviors as a way to reduce difficult feelings and make the situation better but it didn’t work. Learning better coping skills and anxiety medications could greatly improve Kellys quality of life. 7. Explain why it is important to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination (versus separately) throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s well- being. It is important to consider the physical, cognitive and psychosocial factors throughout the life span of an individual because it is the the most basic level of identifying the mental state of an individual. It is also incredibly helpful when it comes to making decisions on is their trauma in the home or is there some type of medical issue that needs to be addressed like autism or other developmental delays are present. 8. Describe the research or theory that best explains Kelly’s behavior. Explain your response. When considering what theory best explains Kellys behavior, Albert Bandura’s Cognitive Theory seems to be the best reputation of her. Bandura says that humans process information, and that the way they process it plays a significant role in their learning, behavior and development (Sigelman & Rider, 2017). Given that Kelly has issues making relationships with her peers in social situations and that when she is challenged, she presents with angry outburst as a way to regulate her emotions, it is a direct result of behavior that was learned from her mother. An evaluation for developmental delays/mental health issues, anger management, Counseling and possibly medications would all be ideal beginning points to help her relearn better skills.
