Good Morning Everyone, The first events I will talk about was in the 1950’s, which occurred years of listening and watching how mental health folks were being treated in institutes that US Congress approved a legislation making a joint Commission on Mental Health and Illness boosting the development of a community mental health concept consequently decreasing the populations in mental hospitals (Moritsugu, et., al, 2013). The conditions of the mental institutions and the unfavorable environmental conditions for individuals reached President JFK in 1963 which was referred to as the Kennedy Bill of 1963. This was funded creation of mental health amenities to sponsor the early recognition of mental health issues, address acute disorders, and a create an in-depth delivery system of services that would help the overall care of these institutionalized individuals. Next, the Civil Rights Movement is an event that led to community psychology. This included such events such as Rosa Parks, which was a woman who was known for refusing to give up her seat on the bus. During this time African-Americans were seeking the right to have civil rights to not have to eat at segregated lunch counters and wanting the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act for African- Americans. in 1965 helped impose the 5 th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing citizens the right to vote (Moritsugu et., al. 2013). Another current event for society that is being influenced by community psychology’s principles is the DACA program. Which was established for the students who did not have a say to seek American citizenship and for their parents could become American citizens in the United States. Now and an issue for this program is that the children’s education funding can be cut because they are not born here in United States. The parents settled to not have then become American citizens. They are instead facing deportation. (Patler & Cabrera, 2015). References Moritsugu, J., Grover-Duffy, K., Wong, F., & Gr Vera, E., (2013).
