Michelle Pavlick Self-Reflective Essay MFT 610 This course has reinforced my passion for working in the mental health field. After my experience in the doctoral program and being unable to finish because of personal health issues, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to return. The thought of going back to school after dealing with significant health issues, having two young children (1 and 3 years old), and working full time was extremely daunting. My previous graduate program focused heavily on individual therapy, with only one class dedicated to child and family therapy. While I would address familial dynamics and concerns with clients in individual therapy, it was definitely not a large focus of my work. After taking this course, I realized how important family dynamics are in a client’s presenting concerns, even if they are seeking services for individual therapy. In evaluating my performance in the class I completed all assignments and discussions. I would have liked to be able to spend more time on the reading. I found myself skimming topics that were review and focused on the areas that I was less familiar with. Time management now is very different for me than it was in my doctoral program. In the doctoral program all of my attention was on my classwork, projects, and seeing clients. Now I am working full time and have to prioritize my family. Finding a better way to balance school, work, and family is something that will be an ongoing adjustment.
There were no topics that I struggled with, but I do think having more examples of triangulation, conflict detouring, and circularities would be helpful. I sometimes find it difficult to determine which is occurring in a particular situation and more examples of each might clarify the differences. Some ways that I might measure future effects of what I have learned in this course would be if I find myself using the concepts learned in class with my clients. This has already proved to be true, as I find myself spending more time evaluating the family dynamics and assessing how they are contributing to my clients’ presenting concerns. I believe that I have achieved the learning outcomes for the course. I have a better understanding of how the MFT field has evolved over the years. I am currently using what I learned about the MFT philosophy and systems approach with my clients. I also have a greater ability to assess and conceptualize clients within the systems theory.
