1 CHAPTER 8: General Intervention Strategies Related to the Sensory Regulation/Sensory Stimulation Function CASE STUDY Umeko Hunter NC Central University EDEC5621.01 Dr. Uzochukwu Nov. 30, 2023
2 CASE STUDY: Develop an Intervention Plan Matt Your job for this case study is to develop an intervention plan based on the function of behavior. The case study will provide a brief description of the student, the student’s classroom setting, and an ABC recording chart presenting the antecedents and setting events (context) related to the behavior and the consequences that follow it. The case study also identifies the function of challenging behavior and provides a rationale for selecting that function. After reading the case study, you will have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive intervention plan to decrease challenging behavior and increase appropriate behavior that will replace the challenging behavior. In developing your intervention plans, you should consider changing the antecedents and setting events, as well as the consequences. 1. In designing an intervention plan to address Matt’s behavior, you should match the function of his behavior. In other words, the intervention should, in part at least, allow Matt to achieve the same function as he currently achieves through challenging behavior. Your intervention plan also should address what will happen if/when challenging behavior does occur. 2. Finally, in addition to addressing appropriate replacement behaviors and the supports for those behaviors, you also should think about how to change antecedent conditions so you can prevent Matt from engaging in challenging behavior. Reread the goals of intervention when the function of challenging behavior is sensory stimulation/sensory regulation as you develop an intervention plan to address Matt’s behavior.
3 Intervention Plan for Matt Objective: The goal of the intervention plan is to address Matt's challenging behavior by providing appropriate avenues for sensory regulation and stimulation while minimizing disruptions to his learning and the classroom environment. 1. Sensory Regulation Strategies: a. Sensory Breaks: Create a sensory break schedule for Matt, allowing him to take short pauses during passive or unstructured tasks. Activities such as rocking, bouncing on a therapy ball, or using sensory gadgets can be included in these breaks. b. Sensory-friendly Environment: Create a sensory-friendly place in the classroom where Matt can participate in activities that give the sensory input he requires. Provide stress balls, fidget toys, and textured surfaces in this area. 2. Structured Activities: a. Structured Transition Routines: Develop and practice structured transition routines with clear visual clues and expectations, limiting Matt's desire for excessive stimulation via running or other disruptive behaviors. b. Modified Seating Provide Matt with flexible seating alternatives, such as a wobble stool or cushion, to allow him to move around and adjust sensory input without disrupting the lesson.
