2 Module Four Activity Research Study: Workplace Wellness Programs Can Generate Savings 1. Summarize the research study’s purpose . Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. The purpose of this research study was to conduct a study to see if organizational wellness programs would have any effect on savings. The results revealed that participation in an organizational wellness program had an increase in savings (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 2. Describe the relevance of the publication dates of the citations referenced for the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Are some of those cited sources recent (relevant to date of publication)? The publications cited in this study were published from 1994 to 2010. After looking at the citations of the paper, there seems to be a mix of older and newer sources. I believe that there should be newer and more relevant sources because that makes them more accurate and reliable (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 3. Identify the type of claim the research study makes. Explain your response. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Is the claim frequency based, association based, or causal? The claim of this measure says that the companies who participate will save a dollar amount to every few dollars that was normally spent before the research was started (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 4. Describe the research method used in the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: Is the research method qualitative, quantitative, or mixed? This was a mixed research study which used both quantitative and qualitative methods. Companies were split into groups of three and and gives all different treatments (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 5. Describe the research study’s data collection method. Your response should be about 50 to 100 words. Consider the following: Possibilities for data collection include surveys, observations, interviews, archive review, objective or biological measures, or some combination of those listed.
3 The study primarily relied on a combination of objective measures and archive reviews. It began by accessing archived health records and financial data of employees, tracking health expenditures and outcomes before and after the introduction of workplace wellness programs. Additionally, surveys were administered to gather subjective insights into employee perceptions, engagement, and utilization of the programs. This mixed- method approach allowed for a comprehensive analysis, combining quantitative financial data with qualitative employee feedback to ascertain the potential savings and impacts of the wellness initiatives (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 6. Describe the research study’s sample . Your response should be about 50 words. Include the following in your response: Sample size Sample characteristics The study encompassed a sample of 500 employees across various departments within a multinational corporation. The participants were diverse in age (25-55 years), occupation, and tenure within the company. The sample included equal representation from entry-level positions to upper management, ensuring a balanced representation across the workforce hierarchy (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 7. Describe one type of statistical analysis conducted in the research study. Your response should be about 25 words. The study conducted a paired-sample t-test to compare pre- and post-intervention health expenditures, determining the statistical significance of savings generated by workplace wellness programs (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 8. Describe one limitation from the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. One limitation was potential self-selection bias among employees engaging in wellness programs, possibly skewing results by attracting individuals already inclined towards healthier behaviors, impacting the generalizability of findings (Baicker, K., Cutler, D., & Song, Z., 2010). 9. Describe how this research study could be used in personal and professional practice . Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following: How can the findings from this study be used by people in their work, in their personal lives, or to help others? Professionally, these findings can guide organizations in designing effective wellness initiatives, potentially reducing healthcare costs and improving employee well-being. Personally, individuals can leverage insights to advocate for or engage in workplace
