The position that I have as a psychologist employed in the Alabama Department of Corrections faces me with problems and moral challenges. I am committed to taking up the rights’ cause of the disabled inmates working beyond my time unpaid. Nevertheless, what I already have on my hands with regard to my caseload is a real struggle, while I receive additional assignments daily. One of the patients I attend tried committing suicide, and despite complaining to my boss about it the situation hasn’t changed. The SPLC and ADAP investigated a number of inmates incarcerated at Alabama’s state prisons. They revealed that the inmates including mentally ill ones are subjected to systematic apathy, discrimination, and dangerously life-threatening conditions. The above-discussed circumstances call into question a number of moral issues that can be evaluated in light of Rushworth Kidder’s four categories. The first typology is on justice versus mercy which considers both the balance between the just treatment of law and fairness. The ADOC on the other side should ensure that the prescribed care for the inmates is given despite their disabilities. Nonetheless, the ADOC lacks adequate staff and resources, hindering its ability to provide the necessary care to the offenders. A balance between justice and mercy should be sought in order to meet the needs of the prisoners taking into account the limitations of the prison system. It is a second typology where the question of whether it is moral or immoral to tell the truth and loyalty to one’s organization arises. Hence, a complaint has been made against the SPLC and
ADAP for merely stating what prisons look like here in Florida. First, my loyalty is to ADOC as an employee and I have to uphold the moral responsibility that requires me to stand with the inmates’ rights. Therefore, I have to find my way out of this dilemma by considering the implications of not telling the truth about the bad medical care provided to the inmates and the consequences that may follow upon them and the penal system itself. The third typology is based on a disagreement that exists between the interests of individuals and the rights and interests of the communities. As a physician, I have to ensure that they are taken care of not only individually but also as individuals of this community. Providing for the short-term needs of inmates as well as looking into larger systemic issues with an aim to protect the public from future harm. Lastly, “short term versus long term” is a typology of conflict between immediate benefits and far-reaching repercussions. However, it is difficult for me to speak out now because this could be dangerous not only for me but also for my whole family in terms of my future career and income. However, in the long run, it must be seen to address systems issues within prisons that are meant to ensure these constitutional rights, so as not to subject other people to future abuse.
