The topic I chose for my research paper is impact of current trends on developing children and adolescents. The use of the Internet, social media, and smartphones have become the new normal for many people, adolescents included. I chose this topic because I want to learn more about how social media and the use of social media and smartphones affect adolescents not only in their day to day lives, but what long term effects could be as well. In a time where their brain ’ s are still developing it is a cause for concern if heavy media use will effect that. There has been research to determine that high levels of media multitasking has been linked with lower school achievement and lower growth mindset in adolescents (Santrock, 2019 .( I have been around for the creation of Instagram and TikTok and as someone with profiles on both apps I can see how the images adolescents are being thrown at on a daily basis can cause stressors. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor ’ s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Development and most recently decided to continue my studies in pursuit of my Master ’ s degree. I believe doing more research on this topic will allow me to learn more about how media and trends really can affect children and adolescents both positively and negatively and what I can do to help them in the future .
