Shelby Folmar ELL525-99-FALL2023 Module 4: Assignment 2 09/25/2023
a. Formative assessment Formative assessment is a type of assessment that essentially “forms” the student’s understanding of material. (In my classroom, I call them knowledge checks.) These can be formal or informal, but more than not tend to be informal. For example, I am a high school music teacher. One of the classes I teach is Guitar I. So far this year, I have taught several chords. I will teach the concept and then walk around and ensure each student knows how to play said chord. This essentially “forms” their understanding but also provides the opportunity to correct and re-learn if needed as well. b. Summative Assessment A summative assessment is a type of assessment that is a “summary” of what the student has learned. These types of assessments are often formal and test the student on what was learned for the entirety of the unit/lesson. Like formative assessments, summative assessments check for understanding. c. Norm-referenced tests. A report outlining performance of student compared to “average” student progress/scores. PSSA and MAP testing are both examples of Norm- referenced testing. d. Criterion-referenced tests. This type of test refers to a standard or criteria to compare to student work/progress. Job placement or field specific testing (PRAXIS) can be an example of criterion-referenced testing. e. Authentic Assessments/Performance Assessment Real world/life application of material learned for meaningful and deep understanding. Anything tangible would be considered an example, such as portfolios, artwork, videos, or performances. f. English language proficiency tests. a. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) b. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
