Harnick 2 Sensory Integration Therapy In 1963 Jean Ayres, educational psychologist, and occupational therapist, established her own intervention known as (ASI) Ayres Sensory Integration (Sensory, 2022). This intervention was founded for the benefit of children with sensory processing difficulties. The newest implementation for SI would be that ASI is a systematic and goal-based intervention distinguishing itself as a wonderful change of pace in the world of occupational therapies. Sensory integration is currently “based upon a theory that describes how the nervous system translates sensory information into action”; the goal is to break down sensory processing into perceptually palatable sizes, which would allow for the child to use a skill based on a sensory perception they normally would ignore (McDougle, 2013). Consequently, for sensory-based interventions, how effective are they for increasing academic skills and decreasing disruptive behaviors, is there evidence to support? Firstly, it is without malintent that people use non-evidence-based interventions, anecdotally it makes sense. However, there is clear and concise information that this type of intervention does not change or improve behavior positively. When learning about the neurological findings behind sensory processing in the autistic brain it is “complicated by the heterogeneity of the disorder as well as the difficulty in designing tasks that can precisely probe our finely tuned and intricately connected sensory neural networks” (Marco, 2011). On the opposite end of the spectrum, a study was done consisting of two groups non-occupational therapy and occupational therapy-sensory integration, the “OT-SI group increased significantly more on Attention and the Cognitive/Social Composite of the Leiter International Performance Scale” (McDougle, 2013). This means that there is some significance for SI rather than none. Another study took comparative data from a plethora of studies and used it for their findings;
